The pontine islands: A Mediterranean escape

This island paradise is Italy's hidden tresure. 庞廷群岛:地中海的逍遥聖地,这处岛屿天堂是意大利的隐秘瑰宝。

Just off the coast of Italy, a bit south of Rome, lie the Pontine Islands, a sun-soaked seaside haven. With its calm atmosphere and sleepy little harbors, this small archipelago is not well-known to foreign tourists. But for Italians on summer vacation and the rich and famous keeping a low profile, it's a favorite destination. Lazy sunbathers and adventurous explorers alike can find their perfect holiday here. There are plenty of hiking trails, historic sites and amazing views scattered around.

The Island also boast beautiful beaches, great swimming opportunities and some of the best seafood in Italy. To get to the Pontine Islands, travelers can take a plane from Rome or Naples. It's also possible to catch a ferry from one of the cities on Italy's western coastline. However, only two of the islands - Ponza and Ventotene - are large enough to provide ferry connections and places to stay. But visitors can rent a boat or use their own to travel conveniently between the smaller islands.

Ponza and Ventotene
A tiny island less than 10 kilometers long, Ponza is the most popular among tourists.Visitors can stay at hotels or, for a cheaper option, rent an apartment for a short time. During the day, tourists flock to Chiaia di Luan, a curved stretch of sand on southern Ponza. Swimming is the preferred way to spend the day - there's no shortage of spots for swimming or diving. Tourists can swim either near the beaches or from boasts in quiet coves that can't be accessed by land.

There are also underwater shipwrecks for curious divers to explore. On land, a variety of historic ruins that are centuries old can be explored. The island of Ventotene, Ponza's calmer neighbor to the southeast, has a long history as a prison. Founded in 313 B.C. as a Roman colony, it became the ideal place to confine misbehaving Roman royalty over the years.

In the first century, Emperor Augustus exiled his daughter Julia there. later, Nero sent his 20-year-old wife.Although they were banned from returning home, some of these prisoners stayed in palaces. The ruins of some of these can still be seen. For visitors interested in architecture, Ventotene offers a castle, the Church of St. Candida and a town hall. These, along with many other buildings on the island, were built in the 1700s.

Off the beaten path
There's more to see and do beyond Ponza and Ventotene. On the island of Zannone lies a nature reserve. Only  one square kilometer in size, it has hiking trails, forests and wild sheep that roam freely.
Zannone is open to visitors during the day, but camping is not allowed. Palmarola, called the "Pearl of the Mediterranean Sea," is the second largest of the Pontine Islands.

Trademark clear waters, ocean caves and unusual rock forms make Palmarola a great location to explore by boat. Each of the Pontine Islands has something to offer- history, nature and a chance to enjoy the warm Mediterranean climate. Whether for adventure or just a break, these islands are the perfect escape for a holiday by the sea.

More Information:
In 1768 King Ferdinand IV of Naples sent hundreds of Criminals to Ventotene for an experiment Ventotene was a clean and beautiful island with no problems. King Ferdinand thought that if he sent criminals to such a pure environment, they would become good people. But soon there was so much crime and fighting on the island that he had to take the criminals back. The experiment was a complete failure.

Pasta! An international favorite

Discover why everyone loves this popular food麵食!各国人士的最爱 - 一探大家喜爱这种热门食物的原因。

Which came first, Italian noodles or Chinese noodles? The debate has raged down through the ages. Legend states that Marco Polo introduced pasta to Italy when he returned from China near the end of the 13th century. Yet nearly 20 years earlier, Italian cookbooks already contained pasta recipes.

A 2005 discovery in northwestern China, though, may have settled the debate. A bowl was found containing noodles that scientists believe are over 4,000 years old! People may never agree on the origin of pasta. But almost everyone agrees that noodles are one of the world's most popular foods.

World Pasta Day
Tomorrow, many will celebrate World Pasta Day, (25th of Oct. each year) honoring the food that's eaten on every continent. The famous food can be found in many different forms in its different locations. Asians eat pasta in soup or stir-fried with vegetables. Europeans and Americans like it with sauce on top. And Brazilians like it filled with meat and cheese. It seems that no matter what's on it or in it, pasta's always the perfect food!

Explaining pasta's popularity
There are many reasons why pasta has become the world's favorite comfort food. It is a food that has remained nearly the same for 500 years. The traditional ingredients are basic - just flour, water and eggs. And processing simply consists of mixing the ingredients together.

After the pasta is produced, it's easy to cook - just boil it or bake it. It can be served hot or cold, and almost any ingredient can be mixed with it. The different - shaped noodles are not only fun, they're also practical, allowing sauces to cling more easily. Most cooks also enjoy the fact that pasta is cheap and quick to prepare for any size group. A pot of spaghetti easily feeds a large crowd or a small family. Best of all, pasta is a heart-healthy food. It contains good fiber and not many calories.

World Pasta Day only happens once a year, but every day is a great day to enjoy some pasta!

Are you on facebook?

你facebook了吗(你有facebook帐户吗)?使用这个乐门社交网站真的是好主意吗?

Nate has been talking to Anna, a friend he has not seen for a few months

It's been really great talking to you, Nate. We should keep in better touch. You're on Facebook, right?
Not anymore. I deleted my account.
Are you insane? Facebook is the best way to communicate with friends, share photos and keep in contact.
Maybe. But it's also a good way to share personal information with people who can harm yo. Anyone can read your profile.
Not really, Facebook has privacy settings, you can choose who you "friend".
True. But many people don't use them.
I know, but that's another problem. What if your boss asked you to friend him?
I guess I'd have to. Probably, or he'd wonder what you were hiding. Then you'd have to really be careful about what you post on the wall. People have gotten fired for posting negative comments about their bosses or jobs.
I'm always careful about what I post. Are your friends?
They can post some pretty damning photos and tag you in them.
True. But that's not likely to happen.
And you're willing to take the risk.
Facebook has revolutionized communication!
It may have revolutionized communication, but it's also creating problems.
Like what?
Like "Facebook depression." For teenagers, Facebook's like a huge popularity contest based on how many friends they have. Plus everybody looks like they're.
Why is that's a bad thing?
Because for kids who already have low self-esteem, Facebook makes the problem worse.
But I've read just the opposite. For shy people, it's actually easier to build Facebook friendships because you don't have to interact face to face.
Well, I'm not so sure that's a good thing.
I just saying Facebook provides a lots of positives for all kinds of people. There are so many groups you can join, and it's a great way to make new friends who share your interests.
Maybe, but I prefer interacting in person.

Inventions of Thomas Edison

There's a reason he was called the wizard.

Have you ever wondered which great minds helped give us the electric light as we know it today? If Thomas Edison (1847 - 1931) was one of your guesses, you were right! But that wasn't the only thing he worked on.

Light
During his lifetime Edison patented more than 1,000 inventions. Let's first take a look at one of his most famous ones.

Did you know that Edison's improvement of the light bulb almost never happened? Needing to keep the carbon from burning up in order to make the bulb work, he sat in his lab wondering what do to. Finally looking up, he saw he had unconsciously rolled some lampblack into a thin thread. He decided to roll the carbon into the same shape. Using this carbon filament, his bulb burned for about 15 hours.

Visual
Edison was probably one of the first movie fans ever. After seeing another inventor's machine showing animals in motion, Edison likewise became interested in moving pictures. He began working on his own motion picture invention. By 1892, Edison and photographer W.K.L.  picture camera and a viewing  implement.

Audio
Edison not only helped give us movies, but he also played a part in the history of music and recording. His first phonograph could both record and play back sound. It amazed the public and brought him international fame.

Communication
From scrutinizing all of Edison's inventions in this field, one sees he was obviously a believer in improving communication between people. In his era, the telegraph was the way to send and receive messages. Edison created the automatic telegraph, a gadget that allowed messages to travel extremely fast. Before, they couldn't go much faster than 40 words per minute, but the automatic telegraph allowed for up to 1,000 !

Edison also played a huge part in creating the telephone. He, of course, didn't invent the telephone, but earlier versions of the machine were limited, and he improved it dramatically. Originally telephones only let people talk to each other over short distances. Recognizing the problem, Edison took it upon himself to invent his own telephone transmitter, which was used up until the 1980s. Edison's inventions changed the world. He once said, " Invention is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration." Even a wizard has to work hard!

The art of Yosifu 原住民艺术家-优席夫

A local artist returns to his roots-本土艺术家回归自己的根
SC: How did you begin your career in the arts?
Y: I've always been pretty artistic. Like many aboriginal kids. I enjoyed singing and dancing. After high school in Hualien, I moved to Taipei to work. I worked at different jobs and joined a singing group called Black Pearl. We were participants in a singing competition - and won. The prize was a recording contract. Unfortunately, we ended up having contract problems and were unable to perform or get another contract.

SC: How did you end up in Edinburgh?
Y: After my career as a performer fell through, I was having a difficult time. I blamed God for my problem. I didn't understand that God had just closed the door on my music career so He could open one for me in art. I had been so close to success as a musician that I couldn't bear to return to my village.
Fortunately, I had a friend from Edinburgh who knew about what had happened to me. He suggested I come to Edinburgh to get away and take some time off.

SC: You had never worked as a painter before. Why did you begin painting?
Y: I arrived in Edinburgh during their International Arts Festival. Edinburgh has a big, active artistic community and being there really opened my eyes. I had never had any formal training, but I started painting because I had a lot of free time.

SC: How did you become a professional painter?
Y: One day, a friend of mine was having a dinner party. One of the guests was the director of an art exhibition. He saw one of my paintings on the wall and asked to see my other paintings. Then he asked to show my work at his exhibition. I agreed, and to my satisfaction ended up selling a painting on the first day of the exhibition.

SC: Most of your pictures are portraits. Is there a reason for that?
Y: Yes, I think humans are beautiful. The color of the hair, the eyes, the shape of the body - humans are remarkable pieces of art from God. I like to communicate emotion through my art, and portraits are a good way to convey emotion faithfully.

SC:How do you create a painting?
Y: I usually have people dress in traditional costumes and take photos of them. Then I use the pictures when I sketch out the painting. I choose the colors by thinking about my memories, the environment and the feelings I am trying to convey. At first, I took pictures of my family because they are beautiful people and were willing to model for free. Now I use lots of other pictures, like old photographs, as references too.

SC: How has your art changed over time?
Y: When I started painting, my art was very Western in style. I painted a lot of flowers and landscapes and things like that. I was influenced a lot by artists like Picasso, Chagall, van Gogh and Gaoguin. I was also influenced by South American art because it reminded me of my own village and people. The overthrow of a dynasty

The beginning of a new era

The beginning of the 20th century saw the Qing Dynasty (请朝) in a shambles. It was weak and corrupt, and conservatives in the government resisted reform. Wars with foreign powers and the Taiping Rebellion (太平天国) had left it weak.

Dr. Sun Yet-sen a Chinese patriot, saw all this and longed for change. His revolutionary writings, including the Three Principles of the People, laid out his hopes for a new and better country. Unfortunately, his attempts to organize a revolution proved ineffectual. But then came the Wuchang Uprising.(武昌起义)

After 1895, the Qing government began training a new modern army in several locations. However, the army officers and soldiers were heavily influenced by Sun's ideas, and many had joined revolutionary organizations. Some had been constructing bombs to use in overthrowing the Qing Dynasty, and one of them accidentally exploded.

When police investigated they discovered name lists of revolutionary organizations with many New Army members. Facing arrest, the army rebelled in Wuchang. The Qing Dynasty failed to respond for two crucial weeks, enabling the rebels to declare a provisional government (临时政府). Watch where you walk

Look where you are going, not at your phone!
In January Cathy Cruz Marrero was walking through a mall in Pennsylvania, texting on her phone. She wasn't watching where she was going, so she tripped and fell into a fountain! Luckily only her pride was hurt - she quickly climbed out and walked away. But the embarrassment didn't end there. Her accident was caught on mall cameras and posted on YouTube.

The video was viewed almost 2 million times and received national attention. Marrero was angry and ashamed, but she learned her lesson: Texting while walking is dangerous. "I could have been walking into a bus, a car,... anything." she said.

Marrero may be famous for her mistake, but she isn't the only one who's taken a tumble while texting. In 2008 more than 1,000 pedestrians in America visited hospitals for similar reasons. They were walking and texting or talking on cellphones when, suddenly, a wall appeared! Or a hole... a street sign... a train. There were cuts, bumps, broken bones and worse.

When they are texting, people walk more slowly. They weave back and forth and don't notice other pople around them. And texting isn't the only thing people do on their phones while walking. They play games, answer e-mails and use applications as well.

Trying to do these things while walking may be dangerous, but people do it anyway. Some think it should be illegal, like texting and driving is in many places. But others think this kind of law would be hard to enforce. Too many people want to keep using their phones while they walk.

In the worst cases, people have died by accidentally walking into traffic while texting. Would anybody walk down the street with their eyes closed? Probably not, but texting is nearly the same thing. It only takes one quick glance to send a text or check an e-mail. In that instant, a little typing could cause a lot of trouble.

More information:
A professor and his class at Western Washington University did an experiment. They wanted to see what people notice when they are using a cell phone. So one student dressed as a clown and rode a unicycle around a crowded campus square. Then they asked students who walked through the square what they saw. Only 25 percent of the students who were using cell phones remembered seeing the clown!

The Business of BRANDS

How much is a name worth?Look around you. Is there Coke in your refrigerator? Is your computer a Dell or Asus? From toothpaste to electronics, brands and brand-name products are all around us.

It hasn't always been this way. Before the Industrial Revolution and the age of mass media, brands were far less prevalent. But since then, brands have become an increasingly prominent part of our daily lives.

An asset worth protecting
In 2006, a container ship, the Cougar Ace, floundered in the Pacific Ocean. Its cargo included 4,703 brand-new Mazda cars, worth more than US$100 million. None of the cars were damaged, but there was still a problem.

The ship had spent several weeks floating at a 60-degree angle, and nobody knew how that would affect the car's engines, electronics and safety devices. Incredibly, Mazda decided to destroy all of the cars - including the individual parts.

"We couldn't run the risk of damaging the brand name that Mazda worked so hard over the years to develop," explained company spokesperson Jeremy Barnes,

Why would a company go to such great lengths to protect its brand name? The answer is simpler than you might imagine.

Brand benefits
Brands offer benefits to both the consumers that buy them and the companies that make them. They tie the manufacturer's reputation to the product and, as a result, brand-name products are often perceived as being of superior quality.

Brand-name products also tend to have a distinctive look or form. This makes it easier for customers to identify things they are looking for when shopping. It also gives companies a convenient way to get repeat customers and to protect their products through copyright laws.

Thanks to advertising, many brands are associated with certain values, traits and lifestyles. In consequence, the brands we use communicate a message about who we are to others.

The business of brands is huge. Together, the world's 10 biggest brands are valued at more than US$420 billion.  And those numbers don't include the value of the companies - that's the value of the brand names alone! That means that for the corporations that own them, brands are more than just product  names.

They are valuable assets that need to be maintained and protected against devaluation - even if doing so means losing US$100 million.

Why Not Community College?

Thinking about studying abroad? Why not consider a community college? More than 40 percent of all undergraduates in America study at community colleges. Some very famous people received a community college education. Like who? Like former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Star Wars producer George Lucas and actor Tom Hanks. These are just a few of the many that join the ranks at community colleges every year. So what is a community college? It's a two -year college that offers a variety of degree programs.

Sometimes known as junior colleges, technical colleges or city colleges, community colleges serve different types of students. Many of them receive an associate degree and then transfer to a four-year university to complete their bachelor's degree. Other students work toward a certificate they need to get a good job. They might study to be a firefighter, a cook or a teacher's assistant. Some students take classes for personal growth in such things as photography, computer skills, foreign languages and parenting.

Here are just a few of the benefits of a community college education:

1. Costs less - The tuition at a community college is frequently less than half of the tuition at a public university. You can save a lot of money by taking your basic college .

2. Fewer English language requirements - Many community colleges have lower or no TOEFL requirement. They also offer English classes for students at all ability levels.

3. Most credits transfer easily - Community colleges usually have good relationships with four-year universities. They make sure students can transfer their credits with no problem.

4. Positive learning environment - Small class sizes, tutoring and international student clubs all add up to students success.

What are you waiting for?

The TV program is translated into 30 languages. But what makes Dora so popular?

She's unique
Long before Dora appeared in August 2000, her creators had been asked to do something special. The kids' TV network Nickelodeon wanted a positive bilingual cartoon character.

In every show, Dora invites the children who are watching to go on an adventure with her. She teaches them a new word or phrase. Dora's young fans then participate in the adventure and help her solve problems They love the challenge, and parents love the lessons Dora teaches about being brave, kind and curious.

Mini Cows

迷你乳牛It’s only the size that makes these cows mini by Audrey Osment.

As farm animals go, cattle rank among the largest. Many of them weigh more than 500 kilograms! But it hasn't always been that way. Historically, cattle were far smaller until the mid-20th century when relatively low feed costs shifted the focus of farmers to getting more meat from each animal. Now, rising feed costs and environmental concerns are reversing that trend, and people in the agriculture business are once more investing in miniature cattle.

How did mini cows get so... small?
There are actually numerous types of mini cattle that come in different shapes, sizes and colors.
Generally, though, minis are far smaller than their larger cousins.

While you might suspect that these tiny cows are a modern wonder of genetic engineering, they actually aren't. The original mini cattle were developed hundreds of years ago by British farmers, primarily because their small farms couldn't accommodate larger cows. Traditionally viewed as ideal for small farms, mini cows were kept to provide a household with milk for a year. They could also annually produce a calf, which was raised to provide the family with beef.

The whys and hows of mini cows
These days, mini cows are proving increasingly popular with both commercial and hobby farmers. The most significant reason for this resurgent popularity is how much cheaper the little cows can be to raise. Regular-sized, brutes need a lot of space and food - both of which are costly. Mini cows simply consume less feed while producing proportionally more meat or milk. Miniature Herfords, for example, produce between 50 and 75 percent of the steak their full-sized cousins produce, but they only eat about half as much.

Miniature Jersey cows can generate up to 15 liters of milk a day though they are so short farmers have to squat way down to milk them. Perhaps more importantly, mini cows are far more environmentally friendly than their larger relatives. In fact, according to Professor Richard Gradwohl, it takes 10 mini cattle to create the same amount of methane that one regular cow produces.

With a long history and a bright future, it looks like mini cows are here to stay. And in this case, the old saying is true: Good things really do come in small packages. (the bigger is the better is not always true.)

Business Lunches

商業午餐People don’t just work in the office by Joan Yu

I like to lunch with co-workers I am close to on a weekly basis, usually on Fridays when we have fewer meetings. We like to try different kinds of food, enjoy each other's company, and have a short getaway from the stressful workplace for an hour. We talk about everything from work to family and weekend plans.

Our team lunch is often held monthly or quarterly at a nice restaurant. The topics range from work issues to what's happened in the company recently as well as personal topics. One of the purposes of a team lunch is to bond and get to know each other better. People share about their life events such as family, kids, sports, buying a house, etc. Our discussions are definitely more formal and serious, however, when the boss is present. A business lunch with a supplier is always about business, with the purpose of developing a better relationship with him or her. We discuss current working issues, relationships and possible future opportunities.

Joan talks with her co-worker Jeff.
Jeff: Hey, Joan, I need your advice.
Joan: Of course. How can I help?
Jeff: I'm hosting my first business lunch next week. Usually I take a co-worker with me, but this time I'm on my own. I want to do everything right.
Joan: I'm happy to give you some pointers.
Jeff: Good. Is there anything in particular I should do - or not do?
Joan: Use good table manners, and don't be late! Where are you having lunch?
Jeff: At Oscar's Seafood.
Joan: That's a good place. The service is excellent, the atmosphere is nice, and it's not too noisy. None of your guests are allergic to seafood are they?
Jeff: I don't know.
Joan: Send them an e-mail to confirm lunch and mention the place and ask if that is all right.
Jeff: OK. And how soon should I get down to business?
Joan: Wait until everyone has looked at the menu and ordered. Spend some time in small talk first. You want to get to know them -and let them get to know you.
Joan: After that, you can bring up what you really want to discuss.

Taiwan’s Giant-Killer

台灣網球之光盧彥勳 Yen-Hsun Lu is winning his way to the top of world tennis 盧彥勳正大步邁向世界網壇巔峰by Chip Ewald

The world likes to see the underdog win. That's why Taiwan's Yen-Hsun Lu (盧彥勛), known as "Rendy" in the English - speaking world, has captured the tennis world's attention in recent years. Lu first shocked the world during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In two straight sets, the 77th-ranked Lu overcame Great Britain's Andy Murray, who ranked number six at the time.

While this win was huge, Lu scored his most exciting upset in the fourth round of Wimbledon last summer. Ranked 82nd, Lu competed against three-time Wimbledon finalist and 2003 U.S. Open champion Andy Roddick. Considering Roddick's ranking, experience and tremendously powerful serves, Lu expected to lose as they began their fifth and final set.

Considering Roddick's ranking, experience and tremendously powerful serves, Lu expected to lose as they began their fifth and final set. instead, he overcame Roddick, boosting his ranking to 42nd in the world and stunning the world. Lu became the first Asian in 15 years and the first. Taiwanese player ever to advance to the fifth round at Wimbledon. By November, he rose to 33rd in the world, prompting everyone to wonder, "Where did this kid come from?"

From chicken-chaser to giant-killer
Born in 1983 to a tennis-playing, chicken-farming father in Taoyuan, Taiwan, Lu learned quickness at a young age chasing chickens. Imitating his father and older brother, Lu picked up a tennis racket at age 6 and never put it down. He began eclipsing his brother's tennis achievements shortly after that, winning his first gold medal in second grade.

Soon others began noticing Lu's knack for tennis. Nobel prize winner Dr. Yuan-Tseh Lee (), and avid tennis player, happened to play on the courts at Lu's elementary school. Lee noticed Lu's natural ability and began encouraging him, fostering his talent, and helping him realize his potential.

With his father's guidance as well as Lee's, Lu shone on the courts throughout his elementary and high school years. But when he was 17, tragedy struck. Lu's father, who was also his mentor, died suddenly of a heart attack.

Upon losing his father, Lu lost his desire for tennis and quit playing the game. But before long, he remembered his father's dream that his son might play at Wimbledon and rank in professional tennis's Top 100.

To achieve his father's dream and support his family financially, Lu knew he needed to play tennis professionally. So he resumed the sport with determination and went professional in 2001. Smartphone Symphony

智慧型手機交響樂Grab your phone and make some music! by Bryan Hagerla

The days of carrying around both a cell phone and an MP3 player are history. Nearly all cell phones sold today double as music-listening devices, with Smartphones going one step further. Thanks to features such as built-in motion sensors and touch screens, Smartphones have turned cell phones into music - making devices that respond to a user's hand movements. Music apps available now allow users to produce the sounds of instruments by tapping virtual drums and forming chords on virtual strings. The following musical apps are two of the most powerful and creative ones on the market.

Improvox
Robert Taub, a famous concert pianist, was looking for a way to help his daughter remember musical compositions. His original idea was to develop software that could photograph a score, play it back and allow a student to imitate the music. Taub decided to leave his performing career behind and form a start-up company called MuseAmi for the purpose of developing such a musical app. Although MuseAmi's first app, the iPhone app called Improvox, doesn't live up to Taub's original idea, it does break new ground.

Described as a "vocal instrument," Improvox helps even terrible singers sound like professionals by correcting their pitch in real-time. Users sing into their phone's microphones and slide their fingers across their touch screens to adjust background harmony and add in effects like echo and reverb. Indeed, Improvox provides tools similar to the ones used in professional recording studios so the users can adjust their sound. And when they're done singing, they have the option of saving their performances and sharing them with friends via e-mail.

Ocarina
Dr. Ge Wang, a professor at Stanford University's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) specializes in making computer-generated music more mobile. His efforts have led to the formation of such experimental groups as the Princeton Laptop Orchestra (PLOrk) and the Standford Mobile Phone Orchestra, or MoPhO. Dressed in black and wearing gloves with round speakers attached, the members of MoPhO look more like super heroes or rock stars than orchestra members. As Wang conducts, they make music by moving their hands in different directions and sliding their fingers across their iPhones' touch screens.

Wang's passion for developing Smartphone music led him to co-found Smule, or "Sonic Mule." This start-up allows him to share his music research with the masses by developing apps that feature "interactive and expressive audio." To date, the company's most popular product is Ocarina, an app that turns the iPhone into an electronic version of the ancient wind instrument of the same name. Users create melodies by placing their fingers on the touch screen's four animated finger holes and then blowing into the phone's microphone. It looks and sounds as if the users are playing real ocarinas!

In line with the company's goal of creating interactive apps, Smule designed Ocarina with World Listener mode. When this mode is selected, users can listen to Ocarina players from around the world whose locations are represented on a global map. As Wang says, Ocarina is perhaps the first instrument in history that allows players from around the world to hear each other. To date, more than 40 million performances have been shared within the around the world to hear each other. To date, more than 40 million performances have been shared within the Ocarina community. And if Wany has his way, millions more will soon join this global Smartphone symphony.

More Information:
As the creativity and power of music-making apps continues to grow, some music bands are turning in their traditional instruments for smartphones.

One such group, iBand, a trio from Europe, plays original music using iPods and iPhones with costume-designed musical apps. Although the group features computer-generated music, the band's singer, Mara, still uses her actuarial voice to sing the group's lyrics.

Cavities: Going, Going, Gone

蛀牙不見了New research could make a trip to the dentist less painful by Ruth Devlin

Face it -few people joyfully anticipate a trip to the dentist. Time spent in a dentist's chair means discomfort in addition to the possibility of a lecture on how to better care for one's teeth. Dentistry routinely makes people's lists of most-hated professions, but most everyone would agree that a trip to the dentist is a necessary evil. This is especially true when it comes to fixing cavities. To do that, a dentist drills out the decay and fills the tooth with gold or other filling material.

New research, however, may make that process a thing of the past. A new peptide called MSH, which is placed in a gel or thin film and pasted next to a cavity, encourages cells inside the tooth to regrow. A study in mice showed that cavities treated with the gel disappeared in about a month. The French scientists who performed the study warned, however, that the gel does not prevent cavities.

People still need to brush several times a day, floss and use mouthwash to maintain good dental health. Also, it will be years before an MSH gel or film will be approved for use in humans.

Good Parenting Skills Can Change the World

改變世界就從良好的教養技巧做起 All of us need to practice healthy parental behaviors toward young children and teenagers by Judi Light Hopson, Emma H. Hopson, R.N. and Ted Ha

Have you noticed that relationships all over the world are full of tension? Many families are stressed to the breaking point. Governments, schools and workplaces all wrestle with "people problems."

The world cannot change for the better until families become more emotionally healthy. Mental health and balanced citizens create a sane society. There is no substitute for a mentally healthy parent figure in one's life. Individuals who raise mentally and emotionally healthy children make a major contribution to our world.

Good parents use these strategies:
* They listen to their children. We all feel valued when other people listen to us. Children cannot feel safe without adults taking time to listen.

* They treat children with respect. Respect means treating a child's feelings tenderly in every possible situation. They give out hugs. Children need the power of touch. Parents who dish out orders and never give hugs are raising emotionally deprived children.

* They discipline properly and consistently. Parents should take control and speak authoritatively when feel safe when parents take control.

(Four keys: listen, respect, love, discipline)

"I see patients in my counseling office who've never had true nurturing from anyone," says a psychologist we'll call Gerald. "They've never known the inner peace of feeling loved and cared for." Gerald says that children under the age of six cannot receive too much love and attention. He adds that discipline is part of that package, but he emphasizes that small children really need this kind of devotion. "Small children who've been hugged, kissed and loved on will grow up to be mentally stable adults," says Gerald.

He goes on to say that hungering for parenting can, for example, get teenage girls into trouble. If the father figure isn't there, a teenage girl will look for love in all the wrong places, Gerald emphasizes. "People in good marriages try hard to nurture each other," says Gerald. "But, if you're married to someone who never got tenderness and hugs, they don't feel comfortable giving that nurturing to you."

Adults who've lived with kindness and respect coming from their parents are the luckiest people on earth. That's not to say they don't feel upset, stressed out or depressed at times. But, those who've been nurtured have the resiliency to bounce back from most problems. It's tough to simulate this kind of nurturing once you're grown. But it can be done.

Gary Smalley, the nationally known relationship expert and author, believes that adults can form "small groups" to kind of "parent" each other. This can be a spiritually based group, or a small group can be caring friends who desire to open up about their lives.

They help each other grow and heal and vow to "be there" for each other. "I'm 65 now," says a woman we'll call Betty. "My parents are gone and my children are scattered around the country. I was depressed for three years before I decided to form a small group. We kind of parent each other." Betty continues, "We meet twice a month to share problems and help each other figure out what to do. We simply encourage each other in a thousand ways."
