The Dating Game

約會遊戲How much dating should people do before marriage? 婚前應有多少約會經驗?by Pam Osment and Ruth Devlin

Conversation:
Wendy and Emma are talking over coffee.

Wendy: Did you get Selena's wedding invitation?

Emma: I sure did. Can you believe she's marrying her high-school sweetheart?

Wendy: What's wrong with that? They both graduated from university last spring and are ready for marriage.

Emma: But Selena has never dated anyone but Josh. She's missed out on the chance to get to know a loft of guys.

Wendy: Maybe she doesn't need to. She's found a guy she loves. She can trust and depend on him, and he shares her values.

Emma: But how can she be sure of that unless she dates a lot? I'm only 22, and I've had six boyfriends already. I'm still trying to figure out who's right for me.

Wendy: You don't' have to date a lot to find Mr Right. The more you date the more you have to deal with break-ups, and that's always hard.

Emma: True. But break-ups make you a stronger person, and you learn more about good and bad relationships.

Wendy: That isn't true for everyone. Many people aren't emotionally prepared to handle the feelings of rejection that go along with break-ups.

Emma: Well, it seems to me there are more positives than negatives when it comes to dating several people.

Wendy: I'm not sure about that. The negatives when it comes to dating several people. For example, Did you know there's a link between serial dating and the high divorce rate in the U.S. .. for instance? Dating lost of people equals lots of break-ups.

Emma: How are they related?

Wendy: Each time you end one romance and start another one it becomes easier to leave a relationship. Unfortunately, that attitude leads to throw away manages which leads to a throwaway approach to people.

Emma: But don't you have to date a lot to learn about acting appropriately with the opposite sex?

Wendy: Right. You can figure that out by interacting with people in group settings.Personally, I think you should focus on your own life goals before marriage instead of being involved in complicated romantic relationships.

Emma: Ok, Ok. So you believe it's best not to date lots of guys if it distracts you from your own plans? Have lots of friendships but save the serious relationships until you're finally ready for Mr. Right. Is that it?

Wendy: That's about it! Now how about some cake with our coffee?

The Elephants of Thailand

泰國養象記Own an elephant for a day at this unique farm 在獨一無二的牧場裡,當一天的大象飼主by Yvette Cardozo

Kwan squeaked at me. She flapped her ears. She looked me in the eye, and most important, she wanted that banana in my hand.

I was supposed to put the banana on her tongue. But Kwan deftly snatched it from my hand. Elephants eat 10 percent of their body weight a day. That's easily 300 kilograms of leaves, fruit or whatever.

At Patara Elephant Farm in Chiang Mai, Thailand, you become an "elephant owner for a day." You inspect your elephant, feed it, brush it, wash it and then ride it to a waterfall. There is a serious side to this. Forty years ago, there were 6,000 domestic and 10,000 wild elephants in Thailand. Today, it's down to 3,200 domestic and only 1,600 wild.
"If we let it go on," said Theerapat Trungprakan (Pat to us), "in another generation there would be no elephants left. " This in a country with 30 words for elephant. And so, I met Kwan. I learned to check her skin for streaks of dirt - a sign she is sleeping lying down as a healthy elephant should. I fed her a basket of fruit and sugar cane (甘蔗).

"Bon, bon."
A signal for Kwan to open her mouth, then, "Dee, dee. Dee, dee." Good girl.
After lunch (hers, not mine), I brushed the dirt off her back with a bundle of leaves so I wouldn't be scraped raw while riding.
The elephants spray themselves with dirt to keep bugs off, but sitting on all that dried dirt is like sitting on sandpaper.
And then we went to the river. I scrubbed with a brush. She sprayed water from her trunk. I hugged. She squeaked. We played.

Getting up on her, though, was another matter. The more limber fold stepped on their elephants' knees and were raised, like an elevator, to chest height, where they scrambled aboard. I took the easy way out. Kwan kneeled and two mahouts grabbed my arms and dragged me aboard. You sit right behind the head. Yeah, you're way up there. But it's far more stable than sitting in one of those giant wooden seats you usually find at elephant rides.

To go, it's "pai." Stop is "how." I said "how" a lot.

Pat started his elephant farm as a rescue program 10 years ago. Kwan, for instance, had been begging for food on the streets of Bangkok. Of the 22 elephant farms in Chiang Mai, this is the only breeding farm. When we visited, six of his 18 females were pregnant. Pat made a point of telling us that his elephants are not trained and that the babies are not separated from their mothers. In some places training can be brutal, involving separating babies from their mothers, imprisoning them in cages and jabbing them with sharp sticks until their wills are broken.

"We specialize in care and breeding," Pat said proudly. "Our elephants are special." We went to a waterfall where the elephants drank, stole more bananas and played. They squirted each other, swam and ducked under water. One fellow turned like a top, throwing his head back and slapping the water with his trunk. I thought about my previous visit to Thailand 12 years ago when I had fed one of those begging Bangkok elephants. Who knows! Maybe it was Kwan.

More Information:
Chiang Mai is in northern Thailand, about an hour's flight from Bangkok.
The coolest and driest time of the year for Chiang Mai is November through February. April is the hottest, with temperatures that easily top 37 degrees Celsius.
When the temperatures drop in the evening, the Chiang Mai night bazaar, or night market, comes to life. Tourists sample Thai cuisine and shop for Chiang Mai's renowned handicrafts.

Spies in Our Midst

間諜就在你身邊Corporate spying – easier than you think 企業間諜活動──比想像中更容易 by Simon Stopps

You hit print and head to the break room. It's been a long week, but your sales report is finally finished. After a quick cup of coffee, you wander down the hall to the printer. But by the time you get there, your report is gone! Is something wrong with the printer? Or have you just been a victim of corporate espionage?

Corporate espionage - businesses spying on competing businesses - is a growing concern for companies of all sizes. In America alone, corporate spying is thought to cost thousands of jobs and billions of dollars a year. These losses make it difficult for companies to justify the cost of innovations that could easily be stolen by their competitors.

At its core, corporate espionage is about gaining an unfair advantage over competitors. This might mean stealing customers or employees, but sometimes it also means more serious things like blackmail and theft. Most corporate spies don't have a lot in common with super spies like James Bond. But like other spies, they do focus on achieving specific goals - they want to find out something about or do something to a competitor. To achieve their goals, corporate spies gather information.

Understanding the importance of information is often the key to foiling corporate espionage. Many companies try to protect themselves by developing expensive electronic security. While there is value in securing online information, companies must recognize the difference between information security and IT security.

For many companies, the best defense is making information less accessible to competitors. But that isn't always as easy as it sounds. Information about companies, products and technologies is easier to acquire now more than ever before. The Internet, press releases and trade shows all provide a wealth of information to anyone who is paying attention.

Other sources of information can also be easily overlooked. Notes from a meeting, a forgotten USB drive or a copy of a report can contain as much information as computer files. And these can be easy for spies to get their hands on. Establishing strategic policies that manage these kinds of information is an important step. More importantly, companies often fail to realize that they are not the only ones who suffer the effects of corporate espionage. Corporate spying also poses a great risk to the livelihoods of employees. Consequently, informed and wary employees are often the best defense money can buy.

Tomatoes

番茄學問大They are more than just delicious 這種水果不只是美味而已by Ruth Devlin

What is your favorite way to eat tomatoes? Do you enjoy them raw, red and joicy in a salad? Or do you prefer them cooked on a pizza or in a soup or sauce? No matter how you eat them, they are good for you. The tomato is a true super food that contains many nutrients, including lycopene. These substances can help fight cancer and prevent heart disease. But people have not always enjoyed tomatoes. For years, people thought they were poisonous.

It wasn't until the 16th century that jpeople in Europe started to eat them. It took until 1820 for Americans to learn to enjoy them. BUt now each American eats an average of 22 pounds of tomatoes per year!

When you buy tomatoes, chosse deep red and sweet-smelling ones. Or grow your own! Tomato plants can easily be grown in posts on a balcony. Keep tomatoes at room temperature. If you put them in the refrigerator, their ripening process changes and ruins the flavor.

Meetings, Meetings, Meetings

職場新鮮人的開會經驗談Managing meetings right can make life easier for everyone 會議處理得當,大家的日子就會更好過by Joan Yu

In a large company, many employees work on cross-functional teams, and getting things done on these teams requires meetings. My day-to-day job consists of many meetings, which sometimes leaves me with little time to do my real work.

The first step in initiating a meeting is finding a time slot that works for everybody that you want to invite. More importantly, you must be sure a meeting room is available at the chosen time. Meeting rooms are booked on a first come, first served basis and fill up quickly. Most of the time, you need to book a room three to five days in advance. Thankfully, not everyone has to be physically present for a meeting. Dial-in numbers are usually provided for those who can't attend in person. After the time of the meeting is set, the one who called the meeting sends out the agenda. Giving out the agenda ahead of time is absolutely essential. It not only prepares the attendees for what to expect, but also encourages them to bring solutions or ideas to the meeting.

I remember attending my very first meeting as a rookie. I was astonished when the meeting chair threw the very fist question at me in front of a room of 30 people. My brain went blank for a good five seconds because I wasn't prepared. But the chair let me off the hook by jumping to the next person. I was so embarrassed not to be able to answer the question. But that taught me to always be prepared for any meeting I would attend from that day on.

Conversation:
Joan: Are you attending the production committee meeting at 2 p.m.?
Jeff: Yes, But I haven't received the agenda yet.
Joan: I haven't either. I think Bruce is chairing the meeting.
Jeff: And he isn't timely when it comes to sending out agendas.
Joan: I know. And it's always difficult to prepare then.
Jeff: Well, at least we know what the projects are. We can make some comments.
Joan: True. But it really helps to know the aspects of the projects Bruce plans to discuss. Otherwise, we're all in the dark.
Jeff: And we look foolish when we don't participate.
Joan: Maybe I'll be proactive and shoot Bruce an e-mail asking for the agenda.
Jeff: Good idea!

Grammar:
My brain went blank for a good five seconds because I wasn't prepared.

Innovative Eco-friendly Products

創新環保產品 From a toilet to a TV, new technology comes in all shapes, sizes and prices 從馬桶到電視機,新科技產品形形色色,尺碼齊by Joe Dunn.

Below are some of the most innovative products that will save you lots of cash in the long run.

Dual-flush toilets
Did you know 40 percent of indoor water usage is flushed down a toilet? That's right - 55 billion gallons of clean water are sent down the pipes each day. Dual-flush toilets use different amounts of water for solid and liquid waste. Anywhere from 30 to 50 percent less water is flushed in addition to the $100 or so dollars saved each year.

Steam dishwashers
Steam dishwashers help save on that water bill. Steam models can use up to 33 percent less water than the standard dishwasher. What's more, studies have shown steam dishwashers clean dishes better than their counterparts. some models even offer owners the ability to customize the wash intensity for an upper rack of wine glasses and lower rack of crusted pots and pans.

Wireless charging
Allowing the charge of up to three devices plus one USB port on brands like Powermat, wireless models offer speeds equivalent to or greater than the manufacturer-provided chargers. In addition, these models incorporate an auto-shutoff feature when charging completes. Products charge while they rest on top of the charging mat. They come in handy during traveling when only a car charger or single electrical outlet is available.

LED light bulbs
LED is the newest alternative to the current, energy-efficient fluorescent light bulbs. But unlike fluorescent bulbs, LED lights contain no traces of the toxic element mercury. They are even found to be 5 percent more efficient than fluorescent and possess a life span of up to 50,000 hours! Purchase costs may be high, but only LEDs can say they will still be glowing 20 years from now.

LCD TVs
LCD is nothing new- liquid crystal display was first discovered as a technology in 1888. But these days, LCD is the standard in energy-efficient TVs. The past year offered up numerous improvements that are determined to save watts and bucks. For one, human presence sensors prompt the TVs to shut off after 30 minutes when no one is in the room. Additionally, illuminating backlights dim and brighten depending on the lighting present in the room. To cut off power completely, just flip a switch on the back panel to avoid paying for that energy use spent in "sleep mode." All of these are just some of the many ways LCD has once again redefined efficiency.

Milford Sound, New Zealand

紐西蘭的米爾福德峽灣Discover the magic and majesty of this amazing waterway 一探這令人驚豔的水道的神奇魅力與宏偉氣勢by Pamela Osment

New Zealand's narrow, icy blue waterway known as Milford Sound is often photographed and painted. Some have called the sound "the most beautiful place in the world." Yet this fiord remained a mystery to most of the outside world until the 20the century.

Nineteen kilometers long, Milford Sound is situated on New Zealand's South Island. The sea helped create the waterway when it flooded a valley of glaciers. Today, rock walls rising straight up out of the water line the fiord.

Though narrow in some spots, the fiord widens to three kilometers. The entrance at Dale Point is only 548 meters wide. This narrow entrance actually kept the waterway a secret from the outside for many years. Early explorers feared getting their ships stuck in the narrow passage and sailed by. In 1812, Captain John Grono sailed into the fiord, proving it was safe for ship travel. The opening of the Homer Tunnel in 1954 made it possible to reach the fiord by car.

Weather and wildlife
Over one million tourists annually explore Milford Sound. Many go by boat or plane. And one winding road leads to it, so people can walk or drive in. No matter how they come, everyone wants a chance to see the wildlife and stunning scenery.

With more than 182 days of rain yearly, the sound is one of the world's wettest places. Yet the rain adds to the beauty by causing waterfalls to spring up throughout the fiord. Visitors can See seals sunning themselves everywhere along the sound. The fiord is home to the New Zealand Fur Seal. One of New Zealand's rarest penguins, the Fiordland crested penguin can also be spotted. Tourists also come to see famous Mitre Peak, with its steep cliffs rising 1,692 meters. One survey named Milford Sound the world's top travel destination. And author Rudyard Kipling once called it "the eighth wonder of the world." It's no surprise then that Milford Sound is a finalist in the New7Wonders of Nature contest.

More Information:
In 1812, when Captain John Grono ventured into Milford Sound's narrow entrance, he was greeted by a vision of matchless natural beauty, Soon after, European seal hunters and fishermen began arriving. It took another 100 years, though, before the flocks of tourists appeared. In 1954, the Homer Tunnel opened, making Milford Sound accessible by automobile. Before that, the sound was only accessible by boat, plane, or foot.

Do Schools Kill Creativity?

學校扼殺了創意嗎?Can students really be creative at school?學生在校真能發揮創意?by Ruth Devlin and Pam Osment

High school students Erin and Paul are talking after class.

Conversation
Erin: What do you think of Mr. Powers' assignment?
Paul: It doesn't matter what I think. Mr. Powers did all the thinking for us. He told us exactly what to do and how to do it.
Erin: What's wrong with that?
Paul: There's no creativity involved. If I decide to do the assignment differently, I'll get a bad grade.
Erin: Why would you want to do it differently?
Paul: Well, I might want to be creative. Maybe I want to think outside the box. But schools kill creativity. Mr. powers' assignment is a perfect example.
Erin: Schools don't kill creativity. The structure, the established hours and the schedules all help prepare us for the expectations of the real world.
Paul: Schools just ensure we're all alike. In school, we are taught to get the right answers and to conform.
Erin: But we have to learn skills like reading and math to be anything in life. Those subjects have right and wrong answers.
Paul: I know. But we also need to be able to play with idea and not just complete assignments.
Besides, people are different and don't all learn in exactly the same way.
Erin: What do you mean?
Paul: Well, for example, teachers once thought the choreographer for Cats, Gillian Lynne, had a learning disability.
Erin: And did she?
Paul: No! Her teachers assumed that she did because she couldn't sit still. Fortunately, her doctor realized she just needed to express herself through movement.
Erin: What happened?
Paul: Her parents enrolled her in a performing arts school. Instead of having all of her creativity suppressed she was able to excel in her field and in life.
Erin: That's a great story, but I really think our school has to follow certain guidelines.
Paul: Maybe. But the classrooms still don't all have to be structured exactly the same way. The same format every day causes students to loss interest and imagination.
Erin: Our classes aren't all like that, though. Ms. Wyann uses lots of creative methods to teach us English.
Paul: You're right. She fosters creativity and gets us excited about learning. I hope her teaching style is contagious!

Grammar:
But we have to learn skills like reading and math to be anything in life.
to be anything in life- the "anything" is not an "object" as "I didn't see anything outside."
"anything" here is "someone or something that is important."
To be anything in any profession, a lot of people start from the bottom and work their way to the top.
If you want to be anything in show business, you have to be willing to work hard.

"Green" solutions for future events

運動賽事的"綠色"之道Event planners may score a big win with these eco-friendly ideas賽事主辦者可望靠環保理念大獲全勝

As Spain Kicked its winning goal, World Cup planners were already thinking about 2014. Plans include looking for ways to make future games "greener." One topic being discussed is the benefits of temporary stadiums rather than permanent ones.

South Africa, for instance, spent hundreds of millions of dollars on several permanent stadiums. Now that soccer fans have departed, city leaders aren't sure how to use the massive arenas. However, permanent structures that are built for one event could soon be a thing of the past.
Architect John Barrow believes solutions exist in something he calls "stadiums in a box." Flexible arenas would be designed to meet the needs of individual events. London's 2010 Olympic stadium will use this idea. During the Olympics, 55,000 temporary seats will be added to 25,000 permanent seats and then removed afterward.

Barrow also suggests using prefab materials to build stadiums. When an event ends, the stadium could be taken apart and built again somewhere else. Recyclable solutions may very well be found in "stadiums in a box."

Will Power

威爾?史密斯的威力Hollywood superstar Will Smith knows success 好萊塢超級巨星威爾?史密斯深知成功的滋味by Chelsea Ewald

He's sold millions of records, had a hit sitcom and starred in multiple blockbuster films. He's one of Hollywood's biggest stars and, arguably, one of the most-recognized celebrities in the world. Will Smith has seemingly done it all, and yet in spite of his immense fame, he continues to stay grounded. His grandmother once wisely advised him, "Don't let failure go to your heart and don't let success go to your head." While that may be a tough task for many Hollywood A-listers, it's second nature for Smith.

A "Prince" is born
Willard Christopher Smith Jr. was born on Sept. 25, 1968, and enjoyed a middle-class upbringing in Philadelphia, Pa. There, Smith learned to appreciate and get along with people of differing ethnic backgrounds.

His neighborhood was a melting pot where people of many different cultures co-existed. Described as a bright child, Smith was known to play up his natural charm. When he was attending high school, Smith's teachers took note of this and aptly nicknamed him "Prince" for his ability to charm his way out of trouble. Little did Smith know that this nickname would stick, bringing him success and fame in the process. When Smith was 16 years old, he met a disc jockey named Jeff Townes at a party. For years Smith had been interested in rap music, creating rhymes with a comedic twist and dreaming of someday making it big. The two adolescents quickly became friends and began to produce music. Townes acting as DJ and Smith as rapper. Soon, the duo became known as DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince and released their first album before Smith even graduated from high school. By the time he was 18, Smith was a millionaire.

Known for their parent-friendly, squeaky-clean lyrics, the duo won the first-ever Grammy award for Best Rap Performance in 1989.
As Smith's musical success soared, another show business opportunity presented itself. In 1990 he was cast as himself in the television show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Although he had no had no prior acting experience, audiences were immediately drawn to Smith and watched in delight as the sitcom propelled him further into the spotlight. The show would run for six seasons, making Smith a household name and paving the way for even greater success.

From the small screen to the silver screen
Today, most people know Smith for his diverse movie roles. He can do anything from action films like Bad Boys to romantic comedies like Hitch and bring in an audience each time. Whether he's battling aliens, robots or Zombies, Smith's characters often have a knack for saving the planet. Such is the case in films like Independence Day, Men in Black, I, Robot and I Am Legend. When Smith ventured into dramatic roles he gained critical praise. He received Oscar nominations for his portrayal of famed boxer Muhammad Ali in Ali and later as a struggling father in The Pursuit of Happyness.

After his 2008 superhero flick Hancock hit theaters, Smith became the first actor to have eight consecutive films gross over $100 million at the box office. Today he remains one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood. Smith continues to find success with each new movie. And when he's got spare time, he often produces hits like the two Grammy-award winners from the 1997 album Big Willie Style. Will Smith puts his mind to his work and succeeds. After all, where there's a Will, there's always a way.

More Information:

Determining Asia’s Best

亞洲杯爭奪戰 Asia’s biggest soccer tournament starts today 亞洲規模最大的足球賽事今日展開by Chip Ewald

Today, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) begins one of the world's foremost soccer tournaments. In the AFC Asian Cup, Asia's top 16 national teams will contend to be the region's best.

How it all got started
The AFC organizes the Asian Cup every four years.
Stretching from Australia to Lebanon, this confederation is the most wide-reaching of FIFA's six confederations.
The AFC began in 1954 with 12 participating nations. As soccer, called football in most countries, grew in popularity throughout Asia, so did the Confederation. Today, the AFC claims 46 member nations-representing over half the world's population! There only 16 out of them are able to play the tournament.

How it all works
In the first round, each of the 16 teams will compete in three matches. Then the eight most successful teams will progress to the next round. The teams that lose in the four matches of that round are knocked out of the tournament. The teams that survive then compete in four final matches that determine the winner.
This winning team claims the Asian title for four years. In addition, it automatically qualifies for another tournament - the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil.

Where it all happens
This year's Asian Cup will take place in the Middle Eastern country of Qatar. Though it's one of the world's smallest countries, Qatar isn't worried about handling the crowd. It successfully hosted the AFC Asian Cup in 1988, using only two stadiums. This time, however, the oil-rich country will use five. Qatar certainly won't be the only country putting its best foot forward at the tournament. Asia's finest will be doing the same as the Asian Cup determines its champion.

Vocabulary Tips
