The Flowers of Valentine’s Day

情人節的花朵Discover the meaning behind some of your favorite flowers 探索你最喜愛的一些花朵的背後意涵 by Audrey Osment

Walk into a flower store and an amazing number of colors and smells greet you! How do you choose which flowers to give to that special someone? Believe it or not, flowers can convey many messages. You can "say it with flowers."

The power of flowers
Even before the first Valentine's Day, people celebrated events by giving flowers. Back in the 1700s, people believed every flower had a special meaning. When they gave flowers, they chose the ones that best expressed their feelings.
Remember that not everyone agrees on these meanings. But to help you make your choice, here are some flowers and the ideas they can stand for.

Red roses
Each color of rose has its own meaning, and red roses often show romantic feelings.

Peruvian lilies
These flowers suggest both loyalty and the bond between friends.

Forget-me-nots
These cleverly named flowers are associated with cherished memories.

Sweet peas
These sweet-smelling flowers are often given when people move and are saying good-bye.

In the end, it doesn't matter which flowers you choose. They will always carry your own personal meaning.

Information
If you plan on giving roses to that special someone today, you should know that different colored roses give different messages.
There's a color that symbolizes love at first sight, a color for appreciation, a color for friendship, and a color that expresses wishes for good health. Now, be careful with black roses because the very unromantic message they send is : the relationship is over!

Christmas at the Biltmore House

到全美最大豪宅過聖誕America’s largest home sparkles with magic at Christmastime 全美最大的豪宅在聖誕節期間閃耀著奇幻光芒by Pamela Osment

On Christmas Eve in 1895, George Washington Vanderbilt of New York City unveiled his mountaintop masterpiece. This beautiful house had taken 1,000 men six years to construct. But what had inspired Vanderbilt to choose this remote location in the mountains near at Asheville, N.C., for his summer home and "little mountain escape"?

Where it began
In the 1800s, Vanderbilt's grandfather Cornelius amassed a fortune in the shipping and railroad business. By the turn of the century, the Vanderbilts were some of the world's richest people and faced some of the same privacy issues as today's celebrities.

This prompted George Vanderbilt to begin searching for a getaway - a place where he and his family could escape the ever-watchful press. While traveling in eastern North Carolina, Vanderbilt was captivated by the region's scenery. He chose a mountain of location there that would provide privacy and allow him to pursue hisinterests in art and horticulture.

A castle fit for a king
If Vanderbilt's Christmas Eve guests had expected a modest second home, they must have been amazed as they crossed his 120,000-acre estate. The carriages then delivered them to the 250-room French chateau equipped with a swimming pool, bowling alley and much more!

"A Vanderbilt Christmas Celebration"
Visitors today are equally awed by the beautiful estate-though it's smaller now at around 7,000 acres- and the palatial house with 34 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms and 65 fireplaces.

An even more spectacular treat, though, awaits those who visit during the annual "Christmas at Biltmore" event. Known as one of the largest Christmas displays in the Southeast, the event boasts nearly 100 decorated Christmas trees and more than 1,000 wreaths and bows. Thirty thousand lights illuminate the Biltmore House and another 150,000 lights light up the estate. During the holiday event, thousands of ornaments also decorate the Biltmore House and its grounds.

People visiting at night are greeted on the front lawn by a 55-foot spruce tree covered with 32,000 lights. Inside, Christmas music, candles and glowing fireplaces provide a festive setting for guests viewing the thousands of decorations spread throughout the house. More than 300,000 people are expected to attend this year's display entitled. "A Vanderbilt Christmas Celebration," which started in November and runs until January 2, 2011.

Thanks to the Vanderbilts' dedication to preserving the Biltmore estate, people today - like the original guests 115 years ago - can still experience the famed Vanderbilt hospitality.

More Information:
Imagine you go to the Biltmore during the Christmas holiday season and take a tour of the estate. After experiencing so much Biltmore Christmas magic, you realize that you are inspired to decorate your own home in a similar style. But, where do you begin? You start by joining a free Biltmore holiday decorating seminar where Biltmore staff offer Christmas decorating tips and fresh ideas for your own home.

The Story of Easter

復活節的由來The real reason people celebrate Easter.人們慶祝復活節的真正理由What is the real reason that people celebrate Easter? by Pamela Osment

More than 2,000 years ago, a special baby named Jesus was born in Israel. Around age 30, Jesus began teaching people about God’s love, claiming that he was God’s son. People were amazed. They were also surprised by his ability to heal, and some traveled long distances to be healed. Jealous of Jesus’ popularity, the Jewish religious leaders began plotting to capture him.

The arrest and crucifixion
One night while Jesus was praying in a garden, soldiers arrested him. They took him to the local religious leaders for questioning. The leaders wanted to put him to death but could find no evidence. Then they took him to Pilate, the region's Roman governor, and he couldn't find Jesus guilty of anything either. However, the people, swayed by the local leaders, demanded his death. And so, Pilate handed Jesus over to be crucified. After beating him, the soldiers hammered Jesus' hands and feet to a cross. With people mocking him as he suffered, Jesus displayed his love by asking God to forgive them. After about six hours, he breathed his final breath.

The resurrection
Jesus' friends took his body wrapped it in cloth, and placed it in a tomb. Jewish leaders, though, feared someone would steal it because Jesus had promised to come back to life on the third day. So Pilate ordered the massive stone at the tomb's opening be sealed and guarded.
Three days later, a violent earthquake occurred when an angel appeared and rolled the stone away, terrifying the guards. Later that morning as several women rushed to the place, the angel met them. He greeted them with the news that Jesus wasn't there he was alive! The women raced back to Jesus' disciples with the news.

When his followers met together that night, Jesus appeared in the midst of them. Naturally, they were frightened. But he ate with them and let them touch the wounds in his feet and hands, proving he was alive. Over the next 40 days, Jesus appeared to over 500 people. After that, his disciples confidently spread the word about Jesus' victory over death and that he truly was the Son of God!

More Information
What if you got caught doing something wrong like stealing? Then, just as you were about to be punished your friend stepped in and took the punishment for you. That's exactly what Jesus did for us. Jesus died so we wouldn't have to face the punishment for those bad things we've done. Because of Jesus' death we've all been given the chance to be forgiven!

New Year's Resolutions

新年新希望Tips for making lasting resolutions by新年正是在生活中力求改变得大好机会! Pamela Osment

Happy New Year!
Today, many of us begin trying to keep our New Year’s resolutions. But unfortunately, most of us will give up on them before the month is over. Why do we bother to make these yearly pledges? And why are they so hard to keep?

Why make them?
Each new year brings the chance to start over and make a new beginning. It seems like the perfect time to deal with some of our habits that are not very desirable. During the holiday season, which begins with Thanksgiving, Americans usually eat too much. that could explain why the first resolution on many lists is to lose weight!
Along with eating too much comes spending too much At Christmastime, people sometimes spend more than they can afford. This often involves using credit cards instead of cash. After the holidays, many are ready to take control of their lives. And New Year's feels like the ideal time to start!

Why can't we keep them?
An American writer wrote, "No one likes change but babies in diapers." Making permanent changes can be difficult because it often involves changing the way we act. When doctors tell patients they will die unless they make lifestyle changes most don't listen. In fact researchers have found that only one in seven makes the necessary changes!
We cling to our habits even when they're not good for us. And we resist change even when it's our own idea. So how can we follow through on our resolutions?

Here are three tips can help us:
Make them positive
Negative language makes us feel like we're being punished. Replace "I won't eat sweets" with "I'll enjoy more of my favorite fruit each day.

Make them specific
Don't say, "I'll exercise more this year." Instead say, "I'll walk around the park four times a week.”

Make them realistic
After three months, review your goals. If they're not working, change or replace them with new ones. You'll have greater success keeping your resolutions if they realistically match your lifestyle.

Grammar
Along with eating too much comes spending too much.
"Along with something comes something else" is a great sentence patent to use when you try to describe "two things or two situating is about happening at the same time"

You can cook with it. You can make candy from it. You can put it into drinks or take it as medicine. Ginger has many uses, but none as beautiful as when it is used in a gingerbread house.

Past and present
Ginger – the key ingredient in gingerbread and the houses themselves – has a long history. It is believed that ginger was used as early as 2,000 B.C. in China. Gingerbread houses were first written about during the 15th century. But it was the 19th-century fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel” that started a trend. As European immigrants made their way around the world, so did gingerbread houses!

One example occurred in the town of Belleville, Ill., in the 1850s. As large numbers of German immigrants moved there, many brought along their gingerbread-house recipes. Today, during the holidays, Belleville hosts a "Gingerbread Walk" through its downtown area. Along the path, shop owners display beautifully made gingerbread houses and other gingerbread creations. 探索這種中秋節最受喜愛的點心的歷史演變吧 by Lisa Holl Chang

Today is Mid-Autumn Festival – and the best way to celebrate is by eating a moon cake! Packed with meaning, round moon cakes suggest the moon, which is full tonight. Moon cakes also represent family gatherings. The word for family gatherings, tuan yuan (團圓) includes the character for round.
Traditional moon cakes have paste fillings covered with pastry. Flavors vary by location, with Cantonese-style cakes being the most popular. But bakeries and hotels now offer unique – and nontraditional – flavors like green tea, chocolate and even durian! The trend started 29 years ago in Hong Kong with “snow-skin” moon cakes. The outer layer is made of rice cake. Snow-skin moon cakes come in colors like pink, purple and yellow and in a variety of flavors. Ice-cream moon cakes are selling like hot cakes. A Day for Dad

屬於爸爸的日子Get ready to celebrate Dadʼs big day by Lisa Holl Chang
父親節到了!幫爸爸好好慶祝這個大日子吧

Day in, day out, dads take on the many complex responsibilities of parenting. Now, a special day to thank them has come. What can we do? The answer may be simpler than you think. The following dads open up about what’s important to them on Father’s Day.

“The great thing about being a father,” says Andrew, an expatriate in Hong Kong, “is seeing your kids grow up. The trick is to learn how to enjoy every stage!” For Father’s Day, “The best thing I can get is TIME with my daughter and two sons: a chance to chat, eat and drink, and enjoy each other’s company!” He adds, “Of course they should pay!”

Time with their families ranked high on many dads' lists. Christian from Canada says, “ I would like my whole family together again (for Father's Day). My daughter and son-in-law live far away. It would be great to share a day with everyone."

Vascily, who is from Russia, expresses a similar sentiment, "I would like to have all my kids, brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles ..30 to 40 people come together for a meal at my house."

For fathers with young children, a simple gesture of appreciation is more than enough for Father's Day. Chris from Los Angeles has three children under under the age of 7. He says, "I would love any sort of card or picture or note that they have made to tell me that they love me as a father. I will treasure those forever."

Bruce lives in Beijing and has a 2-year-old daughter, Emma. He says, "what I really want for Father's Day is a hug, a kiss, a smile and a picture she painted." He continues, "I also want to see Emma share her blessings with other kids and help with kids in orphanages."

Sun Wen-Der in Hualian jokes that it would be great if a family member could "win the lottery" and buy him a car for Father's Day. But, he concludes that it's not the stuff that's important. "The significance of Father's Day is in children respecting their parents, making them happy." He says "Regarding how to celebrate, or whether or not to eat cake or give gifts, these are all small matters." of course, the best way to know just what your dad wants is simple: Ask him!

Did you know
What do fathers want for Father's Day? An online poll taken by InteractiveDad.com in 2008 had some interesting results:36% of fathers said they wanted to eat cut with their family. 13% said they wanted something electronic, like a cell phone, iPod or GPS device. And 8% of fathers said what they wanted most was time alone to do what they want.
