The Art of Mime

In this art form, actions speak louder than words
默劇的藝術 - 在這種藝術形式中,肢體動作勝 於言語

What do you think of when you think of face painted white? A shirt with stripes? White gloves and a black hat? In the West this figure might come to mind when we think of mime.

Mime is the art of acting without using speech. The word can also refer to a person who performs this art. This type of art has grown and changed over the centuries. What began as a simple form of communication is now a form of theater.

Mime through the ages
Mime is one of the earliest forms of self-expression. As languages were developing, humans still used their bodies to speak. Mime first became an art form in ancient Greece. Silent actors performed everyday scenes using gestures. These plays often taught a lesson about values. When the Romans conquered Greece, they took the art of mime back to Italy. There they made it their own. Even after the fall of the Roman Empire, mime survived.

In the mid-1500s mime became a form of street performance in Italy. Mimes wore masks and acted out comedies. Because masks hid their faces, they could make fun of any aspect of society. Everyone enjoyed these performances - young and old, rich and poor.

Mimes also traveled around Europe. Because their art had no words, there was no language barrier. Mime became especially popular in France. French performers created famous mime characters like Pierrot and Bip. These characters helped shape today's mime.

Mime like a pro
Want to try mime? Try communication only through body language; no talking allowed. Watch people's facial expressions and gestures closely and practice copying them. Create a story to act out - this will be more interesting to your audience. No props? No worries! You can create anything you need out of thin air.

The most important thing is to believe your illusion. If you believe it's real, your audience will, too!

Unusual Art Forms
奇特的藝術形式
Art comes in all shapes and sizes 藝術有著各式各樣的 形態與大小

When you consider art, what comes to mind? It may not always be what you think. Art can take almost any form you can imagine! Check out these examples of art that are a little out of the ordinary.

Chopsticks
Many, many disposable chopsticks are thrown away every year. When Bryan Parks learned how many were being wasted, he decided to make a change. He wanted to make people more aware of recycling. So he collected and cleaned used chopsticks. Then he made them into art that can also be a household item. He sells purses, lamps and more, all made of chopsticks.

3-D to 2-D
Many artists try to make their paintings as realistic and 3-D as possible. Alexa Meade does the opposite. She paints real live subjects and then takes their picture. The colorful strokes make them look like painted figures, not real people. In the photos they appear flat and 2-D, just like a painting.

Textile Art
Debbie Smyth "draws" on walls - with thread and pins! She strings the thread from pin to pin to make designs of places and things. It takes several days to complete one of these "drawings." Part of the art is just watching her install it!

Sand
Sand can tell a story. How? Ilana Yahov uses it as a medium in live performances. She spreads sand over a surface and then draws in it with her fingers. Music plays, and the audience watches as she creates a picture. Then she wipes it out and draws another one. Together, these pictures tell dramatic tales.

Kinetic Art
Some art can move by itself! Theo Jansen uses plastic tubes to make giant sculptures he calls "beach animals." They are made of hundreds of these tubes. When the wind blows one part, it moves another part, which moves another. The result? A motorless machine that "walks." Sometimes creative artists use unusual materials to from the most interesting kinds of art!

The Art of Appreciating Art

名畫鑑賞家你來當How can one really appreciate art? 不要光只是觀看藝術作品,要用心去欣賞Do more than look at a piece of art; enjoy it by Ruth Devlin

Perhaps you’re planning a trip to France or Italy. Besides admiring the fantastic architecture and eating outstanding food, you plan to see some fine art. But how do you really appreciate it and understand what you’re seeing?

Before you go
Do your homework. Find out the stories behind some of the great paintings you plan to see. Learn about some of the details the artist inserted to make the painting unique or special. Find out about the artist and what the culture was like during that period of time. Maybe even read about some of the painting techniques used. All this will help you appreciate what you’re seeing.

When you're there
Enjoy the piece of art. Stand in awe in front of it. Don't just take a photo and move on to the next painting, drawing or sculpture. Really look at it; study it from different angles. What emotions do you see? What colors are used? How do those colors create the mood of the picture?

The Mona Lisa
Take, for example, the most famous painting in the world-the Mona Lisa in the Louvre in Paris. People from all over the world throng to see her, take her picture and move on. Knowing more about her can help people appreciate her more. Painted over four years by Leonardo da Vinci beginning in 1502, she is thought to be Lisa Gherardini, a businessman's wife. To paint her, da Vinci used the sfumato technique, a time-consuming method that requires the artist to layer tiny dots of associated colors. The finished work gives the appearance of having no lines.

And then there is her smile. In the 1500s, women in portraits were not to smile widely nor look too serious. The mysterious smile of the Mona Lisa suits the culture perfectly. And it makes people wonder what she is smiling about. Eugene Delacroix, a 19the century French painter declared, "A picture is nothing but a bridge between the soul of the artist and that of the spectator" We should take time to cross that bridge.

Music to Patients' Ears

患者的福「音」
Music calms, comforts and may even heal 病患們驚喜地發現,音樂治療的確有益健康
by Lisa Holl Chang

Throughout time, people have loved music for its ability to transport them into a world of rhythm and melody. Recently, more and more hospitals and clinics have been tapping into the power of music – not only to comfort patients, but to help them heal as well. Welcome to the world of music therapy.

After each of the two world wars, musicians visited hospitals and played instruments for injured soldiers suffering from emotional and physical pain. Today’s music therapists continue this practice, playing instruments such as guitars and harps to bring comfort to their audiences.

Therapist Eric Mammen encourages his patients at a children's hospital to participate with him as he plays. During visits with 13-year-old cancer patient Lawrence Garcia, Mammen encourages Garcia to beat on electric drums while he plays the guitar. The therapy won't cure his cancer, but it does according to Garcia's mom, take away much of the boy's depression.

Music therapy can elevate patients' moods and ease the symptoms of depression according to the American Music Therapy Association. Other benefits include relieving pain, calming tension, aiding sleep, counteracting worry or fear, and easing muscle tension.

Jose Haro personally experienced the benefits of music therapy when he was recovering from heart surgery. During his recovery, he played a piano whose keys lit up, indicating which keys to touch to play along with the background music. Soon, he was playing tunes and noticing something strange. "I was searching for my pain." he says of his experience, "but it was gone".

While Haro's experience provides anecdotal evidence of the power of music to relieve pain, scientific research has proven music also helps patients with Alzheimer's disease and arthritis. In addition, music therapy helps premature babies. Doctors are tapping into a powerful way to teach premature babies that haven't yet learned how to suck lullabies. Doctors use a device that soothes the babies by playing music when they suck on a pacifier. Soon, the babies learn to suck in return for music gaining weight faster and going home earlier than those ho don't use the device.

Even perfectly healthy people are discovering the power of music to calm and heal. Drum circles attract people who find stress relief in pounding out rhythms. While music isn't a cure-all, it does make life a little easier.

More Information
What Is Music Therapy?
According to the American Music Therapy Association, "Music therapy is an established health care profession that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals of all ages. "Music therapy not only helps those recovering from disabilities or illnesses but also improves the quality of life for healthy individuals. So, what are you waiting for? Go listen to some music!
