Future of Tigers

This amazing animal could disappear from the wild in our lifetime.老虎的未来。这种令人惊奇的动物有可能在我们有生之年就从野外消失踪影。

One hundred years ago, over 100,000 tigers wandered the earth, but today there are less than 4,000 in the wild. Even more alarming is the fact that unless immediate answers are found, the tiger could become extinct within a decade.

Tiger basics
Traditionally tigers have been admired for their strength, size, beauty and bold colors. Tigers may look alike, but no two tigers have the same pattern of stripes. They are the largest of the big cats, with bodies as long as two meters and one-meter-long tails.

Tigers are powerful, muscular - weighing up to 363 kilograms - and incredibly fast. They can run at speeds up to 56 kilometers per hour. This speed and strength gives them an advantage over their prey, allowing them to kill much larger animals for food. Tigers have excellent eyesight and hunt in the dark. They hunt alone and travel over a wide area in search of food. Yet in spite of these qualities, nothing has been able to prevent the rapid decline of this beautiful beast.

The threats
In the 20th century alone, three subspecies became extinct: the Bali tiger, the Caspian tiger and the Javan tiger. From the 1930s through the 1980s, one of these subspecies of tigers disappeared nearly every 20 years.  Up until the 1930s, tiger hunting was the greatest menace, but since then, loss of habitat has become a major threat. In the past, tigers roamed from Siberia to Bali and from Turkey to the Russian and Chinese coastlines. Today only about seven percent of their original habitat remains, resulting in fewer tigers in the wild.

As more forests are converted into zones for agricultural or building sites, the tigers' hunting and mating grounds are increasingly lost. The clearing and selling of timber is another factor that is leading to disappearing territory for the tigers.

However, loss of habitat is only one of the reasons why these big cats are endangered. Poachers hunt and kill the animals for various body parts that are sold and used in traditional Asian medicines. Tigers are also widely hunted for their fur. Agencies around the world are searching for ways to save this magnificent animal, but will the solutions come in time?

How can we make a difference?
How can we help governments and agencies like the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) who are working hard to save the tigers?

* Encourage friends and family members to never use anything made from illegal tiger parts. Spread the word that governments have found and approved other sources of traditional medicine made without tiger parts.

* Contact officials and ask for stricter laws against poachers and private owners.

* Pledge to buy wood and paper products made only from legally cleared forests. Look for products that carry the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) label, guaranteeing that the item comes from legal sources.

* Take a tiger vacation. Traveling to tiger reserves in India and elsewhere helps provide desperately needed income and builds support for tiger protection.

WWF hopes to help double the number of tigers in the wild by 2022, the next Year of the Tiger. Let's do our part before it's too late to save these amazing animals.

Plastic Bottle of Light

Plastic bottles are brightening homes and lives in the Philippines.光明之瓶。 在菲律宾,塑胶瓶不仅照亮许多人的住家,也照亮他们的人生.

People often recycle plastic bottles.  But Illac Diaz' s non-profit organization, MyShelter Foundation, has found another use for them. The foundation uses plastic bottles to bring daylight into the tiny, dark homes in Manila's poor areas. These Solar Bottle Bulbs provide cheap and long-lasting light to families who cannot afford much electricity.

People fill the plastic bottles with filtered water and bleach. The bottles are then installed into holes in the houses' roofs. This process takes less than an hour. Then sunlight enters the bottle, and the water allows the light to shine throughout the room. The solar Bottle Bulbs give off as much light as a 55-watt light bulb. And each bulb can last for five years. Such a simple and cheap light source greatly improves the lives of many poor families. The project aims to bring light to one million homes in Manila.

Diaz also hopes to take his project to other communities outside of the city. By doing so, MyShelter Foundation can brighten up the Philippines one bottle at a time.

Hacktivism

Making voices heard over the Internet 駭客行动主义。透过网路让不同的声音被人们听见。

Hackers are people who have advanced computer skills. Activists gather like-minded people together to protest unfair laws laws and practices or to promote a cause. Over the last 20 years or so, these two kinds of people have started joining forces to promote a new kind of Internet-related activism called hacktivism.

The participants, or hacktivists, include computer programmers, artists, activists and ordinary people. Instead of using their real names, many hacktivists use handles - combinations of numerals and letters -that mask their real identities. As opposed to cyber criminals, who use their hacking skills to steal, hacktivists are driven by ideals. They might seek to reveal weaknesses in security systems, protest policies that limit freedom or simply draw media attention to certain causes.

The term backtivism was first coined by members of the hacker group CULT OF THE DEAD COW (cDc) in the late 1990s. In an essay titled "Waging Peace on the Internet," Group member Oxblood Ruffin describes hacktivism as "using technology to advance human rights through electronic media." Of course, not all hacktivists agree with Ruffin's opinion.

Hacktivists tend to agree on keeping the Internet free. But their methods of involving supporters vary. The Electronic Disturbance Theater (EDT) is a group that arranges virtual sit-ins, in which users voluntarily participate in protests against unfair treatment of students or workers. If enough users visit a site at one time, it crashes.

The headline-grabbing group Anonymous has used tactics such as posting links that trick users into participating in one of their distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. When the U.S. Department of Justice shut down megaupload.com last January, Anonymous perceived the move as a threat to Internet freedom. They responded by launching an attack that shut down the Department of Justice site as well as several music industry sites.  Hacktivist group site as well as several music industry sites.

Hacktivist graoup Telecomix uses its technical abilities to help people build emergency communication networks. During last year's protests against former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Telecomix helped protesters communicate with each other after high-speed Internet services were shut down.

Whether hacktivists should be considered heroes or troublemakers is open to interpretation. The only thing for sure is that people with passion and skill will attempt to keep the World Wide Web open and free.

A Diving Paradise

Interested in diving? Moalboal is the place to stare! 潜水天堂:莫亚礁。对潜水有兴趣吗?莫亚礁是个开始(体验潜水)的好地方!

For a wonderful vacation experience, visit Moalboal,  a small town in the southwest of Cebu, Philippines. It's a  three-hour trip from Cebu City, and its population is around 28,000. The sleepy town may not look like much, but Moalboal is home to some of the best dive sites in Asia. If you love the sun and the water, you'll love this little paradise.

Panagsama Beach
The fun starts at Panagsama Beech, a former fishing village that's now scuba central. Walk down the street, and you'll see dive shops, restaurants, resorts and more. Locals sell fresh seafood right on the street. just pick the fish you want, and they'll cook it for you! Or step into one of the open-air restaurants that sit right at the water's edge. These offer all types of food, and all have an ideal view of the ocean.

This town is a close-knit mix of locals and divers. Stay a few days and you'll begin to see some familiar faces!

Diving Moalboal
Visitors often schedule dives with one of the dive shops. These trips are very affordable and fun for divers of all skill levels. The shops rent diving equipment, or you can bring your own. Most shops offer scuba courses. You can take a beginner course and experience diving for the first time. If you're more experienced, you can try a wreck dive or a night dive.

Moalboal's beautiful coral reef has a wide variety of marine life. Sea turtles, lionfish and starfish are a few of the creatures you may see. One popular dive site is Pescador  Island. Underwater, divers can explore a steep wall covered in coral. And don't miss diving with whale sharks! These sharks are enormous at 12 meters or more in length. Don't worry- they're very gentle and only feed on plankton and small fish. If you can't dive, that's OK. You can see the sharks from a boat, or you can try snorkeling with them instead.

Exploring Moalboal
There's a lot to do above the water as well in Panagsama Beach there are plenty of small souvenir shops to shop in. Ride into Moalboal's city center in a local "taxi," a motorcycle with a sidecar.  There you can explore the fruit stands, bakeries and a fish market. If you're in the mood for something really exciting, book a day trip to go river trekking, horseback riding or mountain biking!

Just like the dives, there are tours for people of all skill levels. For a relaxing day, go to beautiful White Beach. Although it is less developed than Panagsama, it's a good place for a beach barbecue! This beach is quiet on weekdays, but the weekends are much busier. Go on a Sunday for a taste of a true Filipino beach party! For such a small place, there's a lot to see and do!

Whether you are underwater or on dry land, Moalboal is a great choice for a tropical adventure.

Changing your financial future

Four simple steps to help you make and stick to a budget. 改变你未来的财务状况。四个简单步骤助你制订及坚守预算.

Are your spending habits doing you more harm than good? Getting control of your daily finances is an important part of personal financial management. If you struggle with budgeting, these four steps will put you on track to a more prosperous future.

1. Track your spending
How much money did you spend on coffee and entertainment last month? Most people have no idea where most of their money goes, so finding out can be a life-changing experience.

Try tracking your spending for one month. Each time you make a purchase, write it down. This will make you aware of your spending and help you analyze it. You may be shocked by how much you are actually spending on something.

2. Making a budget
After you've tracked your spending for a month, creating a realistic budget will be easy. Start your budget by listing all of your major spending areas - food, clothes, entertainment, etc. Then use the information you gained from tracking your spending to come up with a reasonable estimate of how much you should budget for each area.

3. Stay on budget
Once you have created your budget, stick to it by using the envelope method. Prepare on envelope for each of your budget items. Then put your budget money into the envelopes so you can monitor your spending throughout the month. Using the envelope method helps you control the pace of your spending. It also makes it easier to adjust your budget so it is realistic and reflective of your needs.

4. Start an emergency fund
Unexpected expenses can create havoc with your budget. Having an emergency fund gives you the ability to deal with unexpected occurrences while letting you stay on budget. First, decide how much you will need.
Experts often recommend having enough money to cover between three and six months of living expenses. Then set up your emergency fund by opening a bank account that will only be used for emergencies. Make saving for your emergency fund and other saving part of your budget. You can even have your bank automatically transfer a set amount of money into your emergency fund and other savings each month.

The sun gets in your eyes

Wearing sunglasses is so much more than just a fashion statement.耀眼阳光,不可不防。佩戴太阳眼镜绝不只是一种时尚主张而已。

Every time you look in the mirror, a pair of eyes looks back at you. Those same eyes can see a glimmer from a candle from a distance of 14 miles. They process 36,000 bits of information every hour and can distinguish 500 shades of gray. Your eyes' intricate inner workings deserve as much protection as you can give them and wearing sunglasses outdoors is a very good way to start.

Whether you're hiking, watching a baseball game or walking on a city sidewalk, don your sunglasses! Why? Exposure to the UVA and UVB in sunlight damages the eyes, leading to very serious eye problems.

When you choose sunglasses, your priority should be protection. The most important element should be lenses that provide 99 to 100 percent UVA and UVB protection or a UV 400 protective coating.

Everyone needs the same level of UV protection no matter what their ethnic background or eye color is. Ideally, sunglasses should have lenses that wrap around the face and cover the eyes and surrounding skin and eyelids completely. People can get skin cancer on their eyelids! So get in the habit of wearing sunglasses. Keep them by the door, and always grab them when you go out. Your eyes will thank you for years and years to come.

Grammar Tips:
So get in the habit of wearing sunglasses.

The Roma People

Few truly understand the culture of this proud people group.
罗姆人对于这个自豪族群的文化,真正了解的人并不多。

Centuries ago, a group of people left India. No one really knows why. Over time, they journeyed west to Europe, where most have lived ever since. These people called themselves the Roma. But Europeans, thinking they came from Egypt, called them "gypsies." Many people think of gypsies as wandering groups of people. They are associated with colorful clothing, fortune telling and music. But this is not the real picture of Roma culture.

In fact, not all Roma are travelers. Those in Western Europe have historically moved from place to place. But others who settled in Eastern Europe built homes and stayed in one place. Roma culture varies among regions. But most speak both the language of the surrounding people and their own language, Romany.

For centuries, Roma practiced traditional trades. Some were horse traders or musicians. Others made things out of metal or wood. But today, Roma may be found in any profession.

Music
Each Roma settlement developed its own musical style, combining local music with Roma traditions. These styles often sound similar to the music of the surrounding culture. However, most Roma music shares some characteristics, including the timing of the notes and the harmonies. Roma music has also affected the music of other cultures. Roma influences have shaped European folk and classical music and even some American styles.

Stories
Like people of many cultures, the Roma love to tell stories. Their conversations of often include brief references to tales that the entire settlement knows. But they also tell long stories during the evenings or while working. Some stories are funny; others pass down Roma traditions. Over the years, the Roma have faced many challenges. Their neighbors often did not accept them and even accused them of being thieves. Today, many face poverty, prejudice and other problems. Nevertheless, the Roma people are proud of their history and their rich culture.

Car or Scooter?

Is owning a car worth the price?
当开车族还是机车族好?拥有一部自己的车真的值得吗?

Hay, Tim, I'm thinking about buying a car, I know you have one, so what do you think?
Wait; you already own a scooter. Why do you want a car?
I'd like to go on some trips with my friends. More people can fit in a car, and it's more comfortable.
True, but cars are also expensive. You have to buy the car, and then pay for insurance, gas maintenance and other expenses. I wish I still had my scooter. It was so much cheaper!
But I have money. I've been saving for a long time. And besides don't you think a car is worth the expense?
It's depends. Will you really travel enough to justify the expense? You can always rent a car.
Renting a car is expensive, too. Besides, I think the storage space would be useful for both traveling and everyday life.
I got a car because I have a wife and kids now. But you'll be the only person suing the car most of the time. How much stuff will you really need to carry?
I guess I don't need a lot of storage space most of the time. But cars also offer more shelter from the rain and other bad weather than scooters do.
Yeah, it's nice to not have to worry about rain, and air conditioning is a real advantage in the summer. But cars also have some notable disadvantages.
Really? Like what?
Finding a parking space can be difficult, especially in big cities. Scooter are much easier to park.
I guess you're right.
Also, I haven't used my car much lately because the price of gas has gone up a lot. Driving a scooter is much less expensive, and it creates less pollution.
True, but riding in a car is so much safer. Cars provide much more protection. Several of my friends have been hurt in scooter accidents.
That's a good point. Even if you're not a reckless driver, you can still have an accident. If you have the money and it makes you feel safer, maybe buying a car would be worthwhile.
You have made some good points, I guess I'll think about it some more.

Grammar Tips:
I guess I don't need a lot of storage space most of the time.

Jug Bands

Homemade instruments can create some great music
克難樂團 自製樂器照樣能奏出絕妙 的音樂

As they say, a good musician plays the music, not the instrument. Never was this truer than in the case of jug bands. Musicians in a jug band use ordinary, homemade instruments (along with some traditional instruments) to make beautiful music. An old-fashioned washboard becomes a rhythm instrument. A pair of ordinary kitchen spoons helps to keep the beat. A washtub with a broomstick handle and a piece of cord becomes a string bass. Of course, a jug band always has an empty jug used as a wind instrument.

Jug bands have long been a part of the world of jazz and blues music. African-American musicians created this style of music around the beginning of the 20th century in Louisville, Kentucky. Later, jug bands became popular in other river towns like Memphis, Tennessee, and New Orleans, Louisiana. Traditional instruments like the guitar and the violin, or "fiddle." were already popular in southern music. When musicians discovered they could play musical notes with whiskey jugs, the jug band was born.

So how do you play a jug, anyway? You just hold the jug close to your mouth and blow air through your lips to make them vibrate. The jug helps to make the sound louder. What about the other homemade instruments? Scrape the washboard with a hard object. Hit the spoons together against you leg or against a cooking pan. Hum  into a kazoo made from a comb and wax paper.

Early jug band musicians used whatever they had available to make musical instruments. Some of them even made guitars out of cigar boxes. You really have to hear the sound of a jug band to appreciate this fascinating style of music. Find some video clips online, or if you like, attend a jug band festival. The National Jug Band Jubilee in Louisville, Kentucky, is just one of the festivals devoted to preserving "America's happiest music." Soon you'll be clapping along with all the other fans of this delightful music. Maybe you'll want to make your own instrument and join in the fun.

She continued creating new albums and won many awards - 23 of them in 1996 alone. That same year she began giving solo concerts, performing eight nights in a row. These concerts were so successful that her second concert, "Sammi Star Show." was held 16 nights.

Out of the darkness
During Cheng's break from performing, her heart was changed. She realized career success could not give her a complete, satisfying life. But she did find something that could - God. Cheng came out of her period of darkness as a committed Christian. Faith that God is in control replaced her fears with peace and confidence. Following God became her purpose.

Study Tips

Make good use of your study time 善用你的读书时间

A new school year is just beginning! This year, try to make your study time more productive.

Start early
Don't just study the night before a test. Studying a little each day helps you from stronger memories than studying all at once.

Find a good place to study
Pick a quiet location where you won't be disturbed or distracted. Make sure that it's comfortable and that all the materials you need are right there.

Start with the hardest subject
Difficult assignments require the most energy, so do them before you get tired.

Recite the material
As you review information, stop and say it aloud to yourself. Don't look at your book or notes. Try to say the information in your own words.

Take breaks
Most people can only concentrate for a short time. After that, they can't retain new information. Some experts say you can solve this problem by taking 10-minute breaks every 50 minutes. Get up and walk around, or get a drink. Then come back and continue studying.
