Do You Slang?

有趣的英文俚語English “rocks”!英文真的好酷!Making language more colorful one word or phrase at a time. by Ruth Devlin

Where do you find slang? It is like everywhere! And "way cool"-at least to some people. The dictionary defines slang as a kind of language mainly used in casual, playful speech whose terms are usually short-lived and change frequently. Slang coins new words and creates new meanings for old words. Who uses it? Everyone. And you'll find slang in almost every language.

American teens have slang from the emphatic No way! to the ubiquitous like that peppers their language. The slang word chillaxing combines the words chill and relax and means hanging out and doing nothing. Older folks still use slang from their younger days. Examples include have a blast. which means to enjoy a great time, and don't have a cow, which means don't get upset.

Today the Internet helps slang proliferate, but years ago. Shakespeare's writings spread it. Some people say that one in every 10 words Shakespeare used in his plays was slang. His plays popularized a lot of terms-many of which are considered standard language today. Believe it or not, bedroom, employer, luggage, soft-hearted and embrace are among the words Shakespeare either coined or helped to popularize.

Slang affects both vocabulary and grammar. Take like. It can modify a verb, a noun, an adjective or an adverb. But mostly, it's used as a filler-a word that has no meaning that is added to a sentence. An example is "This car is like really slow." Another filler is stuff. This word, which means "and so on." can follow just about any word or phrase: The restaurant sells snacks and stuff.

Popular slang verbs include rule, which means something has superiority. "Our school rules!" Rock has somewhat the same meaning: "You rock" means you are great. The word so when used to mean "very" is nothing new. But in the sentence "I am so over my ex-boyfriend" it means without a doubt.

Some slang lasts for years, and some is very short-lived. No one knows why. The word OK started out as a slang misspelling of " all correct" but has become an acceptable adjective. Cool continues to thrive as well. On the other hand, to dig something, meaning to understand or enjoy it, has gone by the wayside.

Learning slang can be fun and brighten up your language, but remember what is here today is often gone tomorrow.

The delicate taste of a cucumber makes it a popular addition to salads. And the sour taste of a juicy pickle suits hamburgers and hot dogs perfectly. But there is more to a cucumber than its taste. Here are some other interesting uses:

Do You ever forget to polish your shoes and later realize you have an important meeting?

Does your bathroom mirror fog up after a shower?

Trekking Through the Trees

有種冒險在樹梢等著你Adventure awaits in the treetops. by Chelsea Ewald

Tarzan's effortless flights through jungle treetops have had humans living vicariously through him for decades. If only swinging from branch to branch through the jungle rooftop were as feasible for real people. Thanks to canopy trekking, now it is! Today, humans can walk or "fly" through leafy treetops, all the while enjoying nature at its finest.

How it all started
Humans have long been drawn to the mysteries of rainforest canopies. Suspended at around 40 m in the air, these canopies are the most productive habitats on Earth. As much as 40 percent of the world's species spend their lives living among the canopy branches! That's not surprising seeing as the green canopy leaves receive so much sunlight that there is constant food and warmth.

Scientists were among the first to understand the vast diversity of rainforest canopies. In the 1970s they began to study canopies by using ropes to access their heights and building platforms for long-term surveillance. Today, even more elaborate methods are used to study the canopies. One of those methods, canopy walkways, has recently become more than a science project-canopy walkways are now popular tourist attractions too.

The Panama Canal: Connecting Oceans

連接海洋的巴拿馬運河 A short canal saves ships thousands of miles 巴拿馬運河雖是偉大的構想,卻花了很長的時間才大功告成 A great idea, the Panama Canal took a long time to be completed by Bryan Hagerla.

European sailors in the 1500s sought a shortcut to the west coasts of the Americas. Back then, this trip required sailing around Cape Horn, which is the southernmost tip of South America. But Spanish explorer Vasco de Balboa's discovery offered hope. When he crossed the Isthmus of Panama in 1513, he discovered how narrow it was. Only 80.5 km of land separated the Atlantic from the Pacific! The Spanish surveyed the area in hopes of building a canal. But the local governor decided it was impossible.

Fast-forward to 1869. Ferdinanad de Lesseps had completed the 163-km-long Suez Canal, a waterway linking Europe and Asia.France asked him to repeat his success at Panama. he agreed to try. When digging started in 1881, de Lesseps thought building a canal across Panama would be easy. But he didn't realize that digging in a jungle would be so dangerous. De Lesseps and his team abandoned their project after thousands of workers died from diseases caused by mosquitoes.

American President Theodore Roosevelt quickly took over where the French crew had left off. He bought the canal property and sent a team of workers to finish the project. Led by John Stevens, the American team got rid of the mosquitoes. This effort helped the team of nearly 40,000 workers to stay healthy and productive.

The team used gigantic steam shovels to make a path for the canal. But even with the help of such large equipment, the work progressed slowly. Finally, after nearly 10 years of non-stop digging, the canal successfully opened in 1914. The story didn't make the headlines, though. The public was focused on World War I. Therefore the canal wasn't dedicated until July 12, 1920.

Since the canal first opened, more than 960,000 ships have traveled through it. The Panama Canal has become an important link in global shipping . A journey that took weeks now takes hours.

Life Coaching

生涯教練達人Meet a counselor who helps people change their futures. 來認識這位協助人們改造未來的諮商顧問 Helping people change their lives. by Simon Stopps

This month Studio Classroom talks to certified life coach Cinda Columb, M.A. With over 15 years of counseling experience, Columb offers workshops and seminars and helps groups and individuals increase their productivity and achieve their goals. She currently operates "Successfully Ever After," a counseling service in Minneapolis, Minn., USA.

SC: What is a life coach?
CC" A life coach is a trained specialist who works with people that want to improve their lives in specific ways.

SC: How are life coaches different from therapists?
CC: A life coach focuses on the present and moves forward by helping clients identify their goals, aspirations and dreams. The idea behind coaching is that there is nothing wrong with the client but that the client desires an even better life. Coaching has a broad focus and looks at one's entire life: health, relationships, career, spirituality and how they all fit together. In therapy the assumption is that there is something wrong that prevents a person from functioning normally. Therapy focuses on healing and correcting past problematic behavior. In therapy, you look back to determine what brought you to a place of disorder in your life.

SC: Why do people go to life coaches?
CC: There are many reasons people go to life coaches. Many clients want to change their occupation, find healthy relationships, deal with stress or deepen their self-understanding.

SC: What kinds of people can benefit from coaching?
CC: Anyone who wants to try new patterns and form new habits in their life can benefit from coaching. People who are open to new possibilities and prepared to do what is necessary to reach their goals benefit most.

SC: What happens in a typical life coaching session?
CC: I do a number of coaching "exercises" to get an accurate idea of a client's strengths and values. Questions are also a critical part of coaching. A simple question can have a long-term effect on a person's lifestyle. In every coaching session, I listen intently and repeat aloud the exact words I heard from the client. People often respond with enthusiasm and praise me for the wisdom of my words. I tell them I am simply saying their own words back to them.

SC: What results can people expect form life coaching?
CC: People who achieve their goals experience more peace of mind, satisfaction and success in life. Ideally, coaching helps people shift to a higher level of performance and achieve desired results more consistently. I often compare coaching to dropping a stone in the middle of a pond-it's amazing to watch the ripples move to the edges of the shore and sometimes even beyond.

Building Self-Confidence

建立自信的五大心法 You can become a more confident person. 你可以成為更有自信的人by Pamela Osment

How do you enter a room full of strangers? Do you walk right in full of confidence ? Or do you try to slip in without being noticed? The way you go into new situations shows your level of self-confidence.

In life, we admire those who do their tasks confidently. We prefer people who appear to know what they're doing. But where does that confidence begin?

The parent's role
Developing self-confidence starts very early. It's the parents' role to get kids on the right track toward becoming confident people. To help that process, parents should always offer more praise than criticism. That can be done by focusing on the child's strengths. Parents should encourage their children to try new things and take risks. When children make mistakes, their parents should still let them know that they are loved. Children whose parents do these things will likely develop into confident adults. But self-confidence still doesn't come easily. So what's the solution? With most things in life, practice makes perfect, and that is true of confidence skills. The more you practice them, the easier they will become.

Body language
Always hold your head high and look people in the eye. Answer questions clearly and confidently. The way you walk shows others how confident you are.

Strengths and talents
Focus on the things that you do well, and look for opportunities to use those abilities.

Visual encouragement
Keep an item in clear view that reminds you of a recent success. It could be a good test score or a prize from a contest. Remind yourself that one success often leads to the next.

Good preparation
Prepare thoroughly for every project. You'll approach the task more confidently knowing that you're ready.

Mistakes
All humans fail at times, and you will too. But don't allow mistakes to trouble you. Learning from mistakes helps you face the same situation later without fear. Even with practice, you will never be perfect. But you can learn to love and accept yourself and live your life with confidence.

More Information
Here are three simple steps for building self-confidence. First, set goals: make goals realistic and attainable - to maximize feelings of success. Next, imagine yourself- or visualize-performing your tasks and activities perfectly to maximize the potential of success. Finally, use verbal encouragement and positive self-talk. By verbally encouraging yourself (e.g. with phrases such as, "I'm doing really well today!"), you'll reinforce feelings of self-confidence.

Louis Pasteur

細菌之父」巴斯德 This French scientist solved many of the important problems of his time這位法國科學家解決了很多當時的重大難題 This French scientist changed the world. by Lisa Holl Chang

"Let me tell you the secret that has led me to my goal. My strength lies solely in my tenacity," Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) once said. Indeed, Pasteur was a hard-working scientist. He harnessed the power of science to solve problems that afflicted the industries and people of his time.

Born in a working-class family, Pasteur applied himself to meeting his father's expectations that he be educated and eventually teach. Pasteur quickly moved through the French education system, earning his doctorate in 1847. As a professor, he moved from school to school, teaching physics and chemistry, and met his wife, Marie Laurent. In 1857 he finally settled at the Ecole Normale Superieure, a famous teacher's college in Paris, where he assumed the position of Director of Scientific Studies.

Pasteurization
As Director of Scientific Studies, Pasteur continued the research on fermentation that he had started earlier. He discovered that fermentation the biological process that causes products such as milk to turn sour, is carried out by very tiny organisms. His research led to the process of pasteurization, which uses heat to kill harmful germs i a variety of food products.

Scientific and personal challenges
As a teacher, Pasteur emphasized that science should have practical applications. He took on industry-related cases such as a disease affecting the silk industry. Beginning in 1865, Pasteur spent three years investigating the bacteria that were the culprits and developing ways to prevent their spread.
In 1866 Pasteur lost two daughters to typhoid fever. Two years later he became partially paralyzed as a result of grief and stress. But despite these difficulties. Pasteur pressed on to even greater accomplishments.

Fighting disease
In the late 1870s, Pasteur began research in the emerging scientific field of immunization. He developed vaccines for diseases that affected sheep and chickens. Then he took on the deadly disease rabies. For five years Pasteur worked on isolating and weakening the rabies virus. On July 6, 1885, a 9-year-old boy suffering from 14 bites by a rabid dog was brought to him. Pasteur treated the boy with the vaccines he had developed and saved the boy's life.

Following Pasteur's success with rabies, the Pasteur Institute was founded to support Pasteur's scientific work. Pasteur himself headed the institute until his death in 1895. Today, the Pasteur Institute continues to save lives through science.

More Information
While researching fermentation, Pasteur proved that the theory of spontaneous generation-that living material, like germs, simply appeared out of nowhere-was actually incorrect. Through his experiments, Pasteur proved that germs were carried through the air. In England, Dr. Joseph Lister read a paper Pasteur had published and then conducted his own experiments that led to the practice of sterilizing medical equipment in the hospital.
