Hola! Soy Dora! She says the same thing to start every program. And her impact has been felt around the world. Almost two million American kids watch the cartoon character and her friends every Monday through Friday. Millions more children around the world watch Dora too. The TV program is translated into 30 languages. But what makes Dora so popular?

She's unique
Long before Dora appeared in August 2000, her creators had been asked to do something special. The kids' TV network Nickelodeon wanted a positive bilingual cartoon character.

So Dora the Explorer became the very first Latina star of a children's TV series. The hope was that kids would first relate to Dora. Then they could more easily relate to others different from themselves.

She sets a good example
In every show, Dora invites the children who are watching to go on an adventure with her. She teaches them a new word or phrase. Dora's young fans then participate in the adventure and help her solve problems They love the challenge, and parents love the lessons Dora teaches about being brave, kind and curious.

More Information:
Dora the Explorer paved the way for "Ni Hao, Kai-lan," another Nickelodeon multi-cultural children's cartoon that features the character, Kai-lan, a little Chinese-American girl who teaches kids about Chinese culture. Kai-lan also teaches new words and phrases in Mandarin Chinese. Like Dora, Kai-lan has a few animal friends, which include Rintoo the tiger, Tolee the koala, and Hoho the monkey.
