How to Raise an Elephant
收容大象孤兒 -
When Jenny took in Moses in February of 2012, she believed he had only a 20 percent chance of survival. Without the immunities he'd get in his mother's milk, Moses frequently got sick. Thankfully, veterinarians and people from the Elephant Orphanage Project in nearby Zambia helped out a lot. But sadly in November 2012, he got severe diarrhea and could not get over it, and Moses died. Jenny and her many friends continue to mourn the little elephant who touched their lives in such a special way.
"Elephants are very sensitive and pick up on your emotions, if you are sad they comfort you, if you are stressed they are tense, if you are ill they are loving." Jenny said. At the moment, the Jumbo Foundation has no elephants to care for. But as elephant poaching remains a serious problem, Jenny will no doubt take in more orphans in the future. What Jenny learned from caring for Moses will help her when the next orphan comes along.

Locks of Love
一束髮,一份愛 .
Children from poor families receive hairpieces for free or at prices their families can afford. The organization hopes to increase the children's confidence and help them enjoy a more normal life.
The hairpieces are made of hair donated by ordinary people. They grow their hair long, cut off at least 10 inches of it and mail it to Locks of Love. Locks of Love then sends the hair to a company that manufactures hairpieces. The organization estimates that 80 percent of those who give their hair are children who want to help other children. The hairpieces attach to the wearer's head with a tight seal. No one except the children who wear the hairpieces can remove them. This lets the children run, play and swim without worrying about the hairpiece falling off. And other children won't be able to pull the hairpiece off either.
These hairpieces do more than change how the children look. They restore to kids the ability to enjoy their childhood. The children can participate in activities, make friends and face each day with confidence. Locks of Love allows kids to be kids again.

公正貿易使命團
One hundred percent of the profits are returned to the women. They keep half of the money, allowing each woman to make around US $50 a day. The rest is kept in the co-ops, and each one uses its money in different ways. Some groups have bought chickens and pigs, and some have peanut butter businesses. Most people in these countries earn US $1 a day. The money from TJM provides the women with a way out of poverty.
And it's liberating. But beyond just the money that they are making what the beautiful thing to watch is that the women seem to experience healing in making some beautiful jewelry. When you watch them, they get together at the table and they're making the jewelry and they're putting together something beautiful that they have never been able to do before in a culture that's often sometimes diminishes women and their value, and then they get to try on the jewelry. It's transformational to watch a woman from beginning to end, as she enters the co-op and at the end of the training when she is now economically empowered, she's made some money, she's made beautiful art, she's felt valued and it happens no matter what part of the world I'm in.

The Paradigm Project
Improving lives with better stoves
Name one object that can improve a family's health, be an investment for the future of a community and is environmentally sustainable. Give up? According to the founders of The Paradigm Project, the answer is... a stove. Believe it or not, a device called the Rocket Stove can drastically improve the lives of the billions of people who cook over open fires worldwide.
This clean-burning stove produces up to 50 percent less smoke than a traditional cooking fire. Less smoke means family members have less chance of developing respiratory illnesses, which are often the result of exposure to indoor cooking smoke.
Designed to transfer heat to pots quickly, Rocket Stoves are much more efficient than customary cooking fires. By using these stoves, families can make one bundle of firewood last for two to three weeks, as opposed to two to three days. This results in fewer wood-gathering trips, which often require a full day of walking back and forth in the heat. Less wood gathering means less deforestation in places like Kenya, where more than 100 million trees are cut down annually for fuel.
If The Paradigm Project were like most charities, its members would simply collect donations and pass out free stoves. But the group, launched in 2009, operates with a completely different mentality. Instead of giving stoves away, the group helps to create a local industry that manufactures, sells and distributes the stoves, thereby creating jobs that support the local economy. And, as an added benefit, the locally made stoves sell for about half the price of imported ones. Currently, Paradigm has projects in Kenya, Haiti and Guatemala.
The Paradigm Project wants to create lasting change that's not dependent upon donations. Of course, the money to get this stove-making process running must come from somewhere. That's where The Paradigm Project's creative solution to funding kicks in. Since their stoves cut down on pollution, the group can use their expertise in carbon trading to turn stove sales into carbon credits. These credits carry high value to investors whose companies need help in offsetting their carbon emissions.
The Paradigm Project has set a lofty goal - implementing 5 million stoves in developing countries worldwide by 2020. And thanks to its creative business model, the group just might pull it off.

International Justice Mission
Punishing the guilty and protecting the weak. 国际公义宣教组织,惩罚有罪者,保护弱势者。
A slave since the age of 12, Nagaraj was forced to make bricks, laboring for long hours in intense heat. His owner's brutality terrified the slaves, but the worst part for Nagaraj was seeing his children with no education or hope for a better life. It seemed they were trapped in an environment where heat and excessive work were already making them sick. But then, investigators from International Justice Mission (IJM) collaborated with local authorities to free 78 slaves, including Nagaraj, along with their families. Today, Nagaraj is still making bricks-but now he works for himself as a free man.
Nagaraj is far from alone in facing injustice in modern times. Millions of people around the world are currently held as slaves, including almost 2 million child prostitutes, and transporting slaves internationally is a US$32 billion industry. In many countries, widows have no defense against neighbors stealing their land, and police can imprison or beat innocent people without fear of punishment.
Tragic circumstances like these are heartbreaking but for lawyer Gary Haugen, the world's injustice fueled his passion to make a difference. Haugen observed that many organizations dedicatede to helping victims took no action against perpetrators of injustice, who went on to harm more people. He realized that his legal training gave him the ability to work with local legal systems to protect the poor by enforcing law's against harming them. Haugen founded IJM in 1997 to address all types of injustice worldwide, including slavery, forced prostitution, women's lack of land rights and illegal detention by police.
The organization now has field offices in 14 countries in Asia, Africa and Central and South. When IJM confronts one of these issues, its first goal is always to relieve the victim's suffering. It might help the police fine and free slaves, work to restore stolen property or pressure authorities to release an innocent person from prison.
IJM also strives to take legal action against the perpetrators to prevent them from doing more harm and to discourage others from similar behavior. Knowing that the people who harmed them are behind bars can reassure victims that they are safe. Many crimes, however leave their victims with physical and emotional problems that hinder their return to normal life. Thus another goal of IJM is helping those rescued to overcome the trauma they experienced injustice persists in many countries, because local police and court systems are corrupt or incapable of enforcing the laws. In these cases, IJM works to reform and strengthen existing institutions so that they can provide justice on a permanent basis.
To achieve these goals, IJM relies on the help of staff from different backgrounds with different sets of skills. These people are united by a passion for protecting and helping the poor and weak. Their fervent Christian faith motivates them to devote their lives to fighting injustice.
IJM believes that all people are made in the image of God, who loves them and wants to protect them. In Gary Haugen's words, "This is not a God who offers sympathy, best wishes. This is a God who wants evildoers brought to account and vulnerable people protected - here and now!"

The Blue Angels
藍天使 The Blue Angels treat audiences to a spectacular air show by Pamela Osment
This weekend, the skies over Jacksonville, Fla., will roar to life as one of the nation's most famous air squadrons, the Blue Angels, flies into town. The flight demonstration team, composed of highly trained U.S. Navy and Marine Corps jet pilots, will display some of the most difficult flying techniques ever performed. Their shows include vertical rolls up to 15,000 feet. The skilled pilots also combine graceful circles with spectacular dives, amazing their crowds with incredible precision flying. For the big finish, six planes look like they lock wings as they fly 500 miles an hour, only 18 inches apart.
This weekend's show is just one of 68 air shows the Blue Angels will perform in 2010, their 64th year of exhibition.
How did they begin?
At the conclusion of WWII, Admiral Chester W. Nimitz wanted to find a way to keep the public interested in naval aviation. Based on his orders, a flight demonstration team was formed, and in June 1946, the Blue Angels performed their first air show. Since then, nearly 250 pilots have performed astonishing midair maneuvers with the group for more than 463 million fans!
What does it take to be a Blue Angels' pilot?
All pilots who wish to fly with the Blue Angels must be active-duty Navy or Marine Corps jet pilots with a minimum of 1,250 flight hours. They must be willing to travel and maintain a rigorous training schedule, including 120 training flights during the winter training season.
According to Senior Chief Petty Officer George Harris, "We're simply looking for the best and brightest young men and women in the Naval service. We want team players who are excellent communicators... have strong work ethics, and who really want to be the backbone of the Blue Angels organization." in addition to their scheduled air shows, the team visits more than 50,000 people a year at schools and hospitals.
The men and women who serve as Blue Angels take their role seriously as goodwill ambassadors for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.
The maintenance team
While the pilots may be the stars, the maintenance people are the ones who keep the planes flying. Thanks to their great work, the Blue Angels have never cancelled a performance due to a maintenance problem.
Each member of the team, both on the ground and in the air, epitomizes the Blue Angels' pursuit of excellence.
More Information:

Water for the World
為世界尋找水資源Clean water changes lives 次開發一座水井,逐步為人們的生命帶來改變Changing lives one water well at a time. by Chelsea Ewald
You use water every day and probably take it for granted. When you take a shower, you don't worry that the water will stop. When you drink water, you can be confident it is pretty safe. You never have to worry about not having enough water. It is always available to you. But for nearly one billion people, water is a problem. For those who do not have access to safe water, life is a constant struggle.
The problem
In developing countries, clean, safe water is hard to come by. In fact, entire villages sometimes do not have a clean water source. Villagers cannot turn on a faucet to get water but must walk several kilometers to find it. They often have to collect water from dirty rivers and streams. This water is then used for everything from bathing to drinking. When people drink dirty water, they can become very sick. Water-related diseases can even be deadly, especially among children. One child dies every 15 seconds from a water-related disease.
The solution
As this water crisis gains attention from around the world, people are taking action. Many organization's are committed to bringing clean water to places in need.
Water.org
Actor Matt Damon has been raising awareness about the world water crisis for years. In 2009 he co-founded Water.org as a way to bring clean water to people. By forming partnerships with
local organizations, Water.or teaches people how to solve their own water problems. The results have been amazing. Communities in Africa, South Asia and Central America have seen their lives change through Water.org projects.
The Water Project
Another organization working toward transforming lives with clean water is The Water Project. This organization has already helped bring clean water to 60,000 people in India and Africa. They do this by funding and digging wells. As a result of having clean water, people become healthy again. Men return to work, women start small businesses, and children return to school.
Clean water changes lives.
More Information
In developing countries, it's the women and girls who usually collect the water. They often walk several kilometers to find it--taking as long as eight hours a day! Once filled, their water pots can weight as much as 20kg.
A person living in Sub-Saharan Africa uses about 10 to 20 liters of water each day, in contrast, the average Canadian uses 326 liters of water each day.

Birds of Feather Find Sanctuary at World Parrot Refuge
飛向幸福的天堂 A place where every bird has its own story to tell 在这儿的每支鹦鹉都有它们的故事
Birds find a new home in this refuge on Vancouver Island鳥兒在溫哥華島上的庇護所找到了新家by Sally and John MacDonald Copyright ? 2008 The Seat
You never heard such a ruckus. Screeching, squawking and the whap and whir of a thousand rainbow-hued wings fill the air. Welcome to World Parrot Refuge.
About 700 once-abused, neglected or abandoned birds live out what’s left of their long lives in the 23,000-square-foot aviary that’s a sanctuary, vet hospital and raucous bird zoo all in one near Coombs, B.C "These are my babies now." says Wendy Huntbatch, who started the refuge in 2005 on a country road about 25 miles north of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island.
"People get them as pets and then they realize they will live 60 years or more, and they get overwhelmed, or they get tired of caring for them." Huntbatch has named each of her charges and recounts most of their stories by heart. There's Ginny, a Catalina macaw, once kept in a dog crate in a crack house, where, Huntbatch says, "There were probably days when she wasn't given a kind word, much less food." And Goldie, an umbrella cockatoo, loved until her owner became allergic to its dander. And Bod, a blue-front Amazon, came to Huntbatch knowing how to say, "Hello, my name is Bob," bite really hard and then break into a rousing version of " Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" by way of apology. by way of apology. "That's Bob," says Huntbatch. "He knows what he's doing."
All the birds were either captured in the wild to be sold as pets or are first-generation offspring of once-wild birds. In the jungles where they're born, they form stable flocks and are highly social. That means those that are passed around from home to home as temporary pets take a long time to recover psychologically, Huntbatch says. Many have plucked their feathered bodies bare in fits of self-mutilation. They may wear socks knit into special sweaters and head cones to keep them from continuing to peck away at new feathers. But they are too battered mentally and physically to join a flock at the refuge and are treated in a hospital wing for as long as it takes them to grow new feathers and healthy psyches.
The birds that are healthy enough live in flocks in 25-by-50-foot cages in three concrete-lined rooms where they roost in the limbs of "trees" constructed by staff. A new macaw section will be finished soon and will increase the length of the cages to 100 feet to give the flocks even more fly space.Visitors are discouraged from touching the birds in cages, but Huntbatch and her staff often bring individual birds out to be cuddled and cooed over. The trustworthy may get a lip-to-beak kiss from Huntbatch.

It costs about $500 a year to treat and house a healthy parrot. Huntbatch has watched the refuge grow to a $300,000-a-year enterprise. Most of the money comes from donations and admission fees. But in the past year, the provincial lotteries commission has added the refuge to the list of non-profit agencies it is required by law to help support; about $75,000 has come to the refuge from lottery players. Canadian casino have donated $11,000 toward an enlarged veterinary hospital to be built on site. These birds' days as pets are over. They can't be adopted although visitors can sign up to donate funds to "virtually" adopt one.
"They're ours now," says Huntbatch. "We'll care for them and love them until they're old and gray, just like old people."

Liquid Glasses
水水的眼鏡A new kind of glasses may solve a major world problem
What would you do if you had trouble reading this page? You would probably go to an eye doctor who might give you glasses. For many people around the world, though, such a solution isn’t that simple.
The World Health Organization reports that around 1 billion people in the world could benefit from glasses. Yet places like Ghana have only one optometrist per 8 million people. This makes glasses almost impossible to get. Joshua Silver, a professor at Oxford University, however, may have solved the problem.
Silver has developed liquid-filled glasses that wearers adjust themselves without seeing a doctor! The lenses are filled with oil. Using a dial on the glasses, the wearer adjusts the amount of oil. This changes the strength of the lens. After the wearer finds the right strength, he seals the lens with a valve.
Results show that among those who have tried the glasses, around 80 percent successfully corrected their vision. Silver's goal is for everyone who still needs glasses to have them by 2020. With his self-adjusting glasses. Silver may find that his goal just might be in sight.
More Information
Kevin White began Global Vision 2020 as a way to distribute Silver's glasses to needy people around the world. he trains volunteers from local organizations in developing countries. The volunteers are given two simple tasks, distribute glasses to those in need and train OTHER local volunteers to do the same. In this way, White says the Global Vision vision will continue to grow!

ShelterBox
這箱子能變出東西這箱子能變出東西Providing shelter to those in need around the world This organization provides housing to people in need around the world 庇護箱組織提供臨時庇護處給全球各地有迫切需要的民眾
Disasters can occur anywhere and anytime. Some are acts of nature, and some are acts of war. Many organizations respond with food, water and medicine to help people survive. Housing, however, presents a major problem. That which is provided is often inadequate. Many families lack privacy as they share a common living space. And some families can no longer live together.
The beginnings
Frustrated with this situation, Tom Henderson wanted to help. A former Royal Navy search and rescue diver, Henderson had first-hand knowledge of disaster relief. In 1999 after some research, he came up with ShelterBox – housing in a box. Others, including people in the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in the U.K., liked the idea. So in 2000 this club, of which Tom is a member, adopted ShelterBox as its major project. The 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia changed ShelterBox's history. Money poured into the club, and volunteers provided assistance to thousands. ShelterBox went from sending 2,600 boxes in 2004 to 22,000 in 2005.
The Box
What exactly does a ShelterBox contain? The contents vary slightly, but each 50-kg container holds a strong, high-quality, ten-person tent. These tents are testd in a variety of weather conditions and changed as better masterials are found. The box also includes blankets, mosquito nets, cooking pots, water purification tablets, tools and more. Also available are school supplies such as chalk, a balckboard and radio.
How it works
When a disaster strikes, a ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) that consists entirely of volunteers arrives on the scene. The SRT works with local authorities to determine who needs shelter. The volunteers also accompany the boxes and teach the recipients how to set up the equipment. The boxes and contents then become the permanent property of the families that receive them. Hundreds of volunteers raise funds, pack boxes and deliver the aid. According to ShelterBox, over 90 percent of all contributions go directly into the boxes. Now that is money well spent!

Tree Valley Park
當工業和大自然相遇When industry meets nature
What do eco-friendly buildings, a high-tech industrial area, and an archaeological site have in common? If you ask the people at Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO), they will say everything. And if you visit the site of Chi Mei’s LCD-TV special zone called Tree Valley Park, adjacent to the Southern Taiwan Science Park, you will most likely find yourself in agreement.
What you first notice when you enter Tree Valley Park is that it doesn’t fit most people’s image of an industrial park. You won’t find gray buildings with tiny windows and smokestacks pouring pollutants into the environment anywhere. Instead you see clean, wide streets, buildings exhibiting state-of-the-art "green" architecture, a beautiful lake, grass and trees. In fact, eventually, a total of 100,000 saplings will be planted on the premises, and additional plans call for an organic greenhouse and vegetable garden.
By making use of technology that prevents pollution and concepts that utilize environmentally protective designs, CMO has improved the company's efficiency while preserving natural resources. Caring for the local ecosystem, educating students regarding environment protection, and supporting projects that preserve local culture are the goals of those who work at Tree Valley Park.
Tree Valley Park has opened wide its gates to anyone desiring to get away from it all for a day. Visitors can pedal along the 17-kilometer bike path that meanders around Tree Valley's 247 hectares of land.
The curious can visit the Siraya Tribe archaeological excavation site where cultural artifacts and skeletons can be found from this 10,000-year-old people group that inhabited the area. The interactive Museum of Life Science, scheduled to open in September, promises related exhibits in science as well as others in art and music. Man-made Mandolin Lake offers boating and other water activities for the whole family.

Find out what makes this industrial park different by Linda Ludwig

Shoes With Soul
有靈魂的鞋子The charity Soul of Africa produces shoes to help people in South Africa Holl Chang
In small factories in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, women stitch leather shoes. Before these factories opened, the women were unemployed, but now they earn money for their families. Shoes from these factories are sold online or sent to the U.S. or U.K., where people buy them. The profits from the sales go back to South Africa. The money helps to keep community centers in KwaZulu-Natal running. These centers serve children and families affected by AIDS. Soul of Africa makes this all possible.
In 2003, Lancelot Clark, a sixth generation member of the family that began Clarks shoes, visited South Africa. The visit opened his eyes to the effects of the AIDS crisis. Deciding to help. Clark designed a shoe that could be made by women in their homes. He then teamed up with South African shoe manufacturers Mike and Sarah Gedye. Together they formed Soul of Africa, which employs over 70 women and helps children through 30 centers, and other projects. By providing jobs and helping children, this charity proves shoes can "have soul" as well as soles.
