The 2010 Taipei International Flora Expo

二○一○台北花博A plant-lover’s dream comes true 植物熱愛者的美夢成真by Chip Ewald

Whether you love plants or just appreciate their benefits, you'll enjoy this special flora exposition. From now until late April 2011, Taipei is hosting the 2010 Taipei International Flora Expo.

Enjoying the Expo
The Expo area consists of four beautiful parks, totaling over 900,000 square meters. The 14 pavilions and buildings in these parks give visitors many opportunities to enjoy nature's beauty indoors. Live shows and films will feature art, culture and the natural world.

The expo will be both exciting and educational for people. A sea of flowers -22,000 square meters of colorful blooms in total-will amaze visitors. This includes the largest floral garden, which covers 9,323 square meters! Bonsais that are over a century old will prompt respect from the young and old. A 12,000-square-meter global garden presents exhibits by cities and gardening organizations from around the world. High-tech displays throughout the expo will help guests learn about the complex lives of flowers and butterflies. Also, flora-inspired fashion shows will show how nature's beauty mixes with the fashion world.

"Greening" the city:
Many Asian flora expos have been held outside city centers - in suburbs. But people everywhere are showing a desire for more urban green spaces. So Taipei is making sure this expo takes place in the heart of the city.

International events like this greatly benefit the host. Taipei expects 8 million visitors during the six-month expo. As a result, some think this event will produce NT$16.8 billion in economic benefits. City officials, however, are not simply eager for the extra income. They hope the expo transforms Taipei's soul and changes Taipei into a "garden city."

Transforming more than Taipei, the Flora Expo aims to encourage all visitors to become more eco-friendly. The pavilions themselves are green. For example. the Far Eastern Eco ARK Pavilion uses solar power for some of its energy. Expo planners want international visitors to return home a little more "green." They also hope visitors take with them a deeper appreciation of nature and passion to protect it.
