Daniel Craig: From Stage to Screen

從舞台躍上銀幕的丹尼爾?克雷格One of Britain’s busiest actors brings “Bond” into the 21st century英國最忙碌的一位演員將「龐德」帶入二十一世紀by Pamela Osment

Like many little boys in the 1970s, Daniel Craig dreamed of being James Bond, but as an adult actor, he never aspired to play the part. Yet it was this very role as the famous secret agent that turned Craig into a Hollywood superstar.

A young star in the making
Craig was born in 1968 in Chester, England, to parents Tim and Olivia Craig. His mother, who at one time had acting aspirations, exposed her son to theatrical productions at a very young age. It came as no surprise when Craig earned his very first role at age 6 in his primary school's production of the musical Oliver. Soon after, Craig accompanied his father to see his first Bond movie, and the impact of the two experiences resulted in his catching the acting bug!

He might not have been a great student, but according to his high school drama teacher Hilary Green, he was one of the school's best actors. She said that it was clear from his very first audition that "he was a natural on the stage... and quite exceptional." Others must have agreed because at age 16 Craig auditioned and was accepted into London's National Youth Theater (NYT).

The Blonde Bond
One of those roles caught the eye of movie producer Barbara Broccoli, who had just begun looking for someone to replace Pierce Brosnan as James Bond. Broccoli said that when she saw Craig on the screen, she saw her Bond staring back at her.

Craig later graduated from London's premier academy, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In 1992, he made his professional debut in the film The Power of One. He kept busy over the next 14 years, taking on over 50 roles and amassing an impressive resume. Though she was convinced Craig wasn't so sure. He had already earned the reputation as a serious, credible actor, and he knew that taking on the role of Bond could be a gamble. Craig accepted the part, though, and the gamble paid off as his first Bond film, Casino Royale earned $594,239,066, becoming the highest-grossing Bond film in the franchise. Craig once said, "I always wanted to be an actor. I had the arrogance to believe I couldn't be anything else." Whether it was arrogance or determination, his fans are glad he hasn't let anything stand in the way of his acting career.
