Chiling Tong

董繼玲Her passion for English has led to a productive life of helping others樂於助人使董繼玲一路走進華府 by Pamela Osment

"Studio Classroom is on the air!” Growing up, Chiling Tong was greeted by these words every morning, and in fact, if she didn’t hear them, she knew she had overslept!

From an early age, her mother impressed upon her the importance of learning English, and as Tong listened to Studio Classroom, she became curious about America. Thereafter, she had a desire to go to America to pursue her dreams.

Opportunities abound
Tong's dreams came true in 1984 when she became a student at California State University, Long Beach After graduating in 1988, she began working for the State of California and over the next 12 years served in various ways.

Tong's many roles included assistant secretary for international trade in the California Trade and Commerce Agency. In this capacity, she promoted the state's economic development as well as its trade and employment services.

An even greater opportunity came in 2001 when president's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Tong next accepted a position in the U.S. Department of Commerce, where she worked until January 2009. Now after 20 years of public service. Tong is taking on a new role.

International Leadership Foundation
When asked recently about her latest project, Tong said, "I want to help young people gain competence and prepare them to face life's challenges. You become a public servant because you have a passion and a dream and you want to help people."

With those goals in mind, Tong and her husband, Joel Szabat, co-founded International Leadership Foundation (ILF). Each year, ILF awards scholarships to approximately 35 Asian-Pacific American college students and sponsors nearly 120 more students for leadership training. The scholarship recipients get hands-on experience while performing public service internships in various governmental agencies.

New program for Asian students
Whereas the scholarship program is designed for Asain Americans, "Young Ambassadors, ILF's 12-day summer program held in Washington, D.C., is strictly for college students from Asia. It includes lectures on public policy, business negotiation skills, environmental protection, global economic trends and more. Students tour area monuments and government offices, and they visit with congressmen and women. Through its various training programs, ILF strives to raise up future business and government leaders. Tong's childhood passion for English became a vehicle for personal achievement.

Today, she uses her passion, enthusiasm and experience to help prepare others for a world of exciting opportunities!

About the ILF experience. Jasper Lo of Boston University writes, "(It) opened my eyes not only to work life but to the inner-workings of government bureaucracy. Overall, the ILF D.C. civic Fellowship taught me how to get ahead in the business world, (taught me) an appreciation for government organizations and (gave me) the knowledge needed to promote (the cause of ) Asian Pacific Americans in today's America."
