Fun in the Sun

樂在陽光下
For Americans, fun in the sun often means a suntan by Ruth Devlin
看看为什么美国人会这么喜欢把肌肤晒成古铜色

In the Western world, many believe a tan gives a person a healthy glow. Americans love the sun, and some spend hours outside getting a tan. Others spend money getting a tan inside at a tanning salon. Americans do this in spite of all the warnings about skin cancer. Eighty-one percent of teenagers know that sunburns increase the risk of developing skin cancer. But only 52 percent of teens are careful about protecting their skin.

Some people do take the risks seriously. However, they still want the tanned look without the resulting skin damage. They get their tans from a bottle of tanning lotion.

Not all Americans want tans, however. Some stay out of the sun. Or they wear hats and long-sleeved shirts and long pants when they go outside. But they do not carry umbrellas. In Asia, the same umbrella is used for protection from rain or sun. Americans use umbrellas only for rain.

Come on, Laura, let's go, I can't wait to hit the beach!
Did you put on your sunscreen? No, I don't need sunscreen. I want to get tan.
But you don't want to get a sunburn, do you? Of course not. I don't want to look like a lobster!
Then use sunscreen. You can still get a tan, and you won't run the risk of domaging your skin.
Ok. I'll put some on when we get to the beach.
You need to apply it at least 30 minutes before you go out in the sun. Ok.

You could try one of these too. What is it? UV wrisband.
Then, put it on your wrist at the same time you apply sunscreen.
What does it do? expose the sun, and it turns purple. It turns brown when it's time to put on more sunscreen. And when the color turns to cream, it's time to get out of the sun.
That's certainly better than waiting until you're burned!
It is. But I'm still planning to stay in the shade at the beach.
Then I'll put the beach umbrella in the car!

Addition information:
Getting an artificial tan by using electric sun beds is big business. In North America alone the sun bed tanning business is bringing in well over &1 billion per year. But, are sun beds safe? Many medical experts believe they are not. Predictably, those in the sun bed business claim they are safe. So, before you make your decision, do somehomework-because the verdict is still out.
