Asia Competes

亞洲競賽Guangzhou (廣州) hosts the 16th Asian Games 第十六屆亞運由廣州主辦 by Simon Stopps

From today until Nov.27, Guangzhou, China, will host the 16th Asian Games. With 45 teams competing in 42 sports, this will be the biggest Asian Games ever!

The Asian Games feature a mixture of many different kinds of sports. Twenty-eight of them are Olympic sports while others are uniquely Asian. Some sports, like karate, dragon boat racing and wushu are familiar to Asian sports fans. Others will be less well-known. These games will give fans the chance to watch sepak takraw, a Malaysian ball game. They can also see kabbadi, an exciting team sport from South Asia.

The city has worked hard to get ready for these games. An emblem and mascots based on goats have been chosen for the games. The energetic cartoon mascots are five goats competing in various sports. Moreover, 11 new and 32 rebuilt stadiums have been prepared to hold sports events.

Guangzhou doesn't just want these to be the biggest Asian Games ever. The city also wants them to be the best!
