Can I get a refund?

Not satisfied? Get your money back不滿意買到的商品?把錢要回來吧
You can get your money back if you’re not satisfied by Ruth Devlin

It happens to everyone. You buy something and a few days later, you’re not happy with the product or service. What can you do? You can usually return the product or cancel the service and get your money back. Many companies have good refund policies. But before buying anything, find out about a company’s policy – better safe than sorry.

In addition, be sure the company is reputable. In the United States, you can check with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to get that information. By law, a company's return or refund policy must be posted by cash registers or printed on sales receipts. Usually there is a time limit for refunds or exchanges. Be careful to stay within that time period. If you shop online, be sure to read the return or refund policy on the company's website. And most important, get a receipt and keep it. That's your proof that you actually paid for an item.

Conversation A
Laura: Hey, Jack, look at the laptop on this webpage. It's only $499- what a great deal! I'm going to buy it.
Jack : Have you read the return policy yet?
Laura: Not yet! Let's see... "You may return new, unopened items within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. Items should be in their original product packaging."
Jack: OK. But what if you've opened the item?
Laura: Uh, for any opened lap top or desktop computer, a 15 percent restocking fee will apply. So I'd only get a partial refund.
Jack: Then be sure you really want it.

Conversation B (in a store)
Jack: This stereo is 35 percent off right now. And I have the cash on me to pay for it.
Laura: If you buy it, don't pay cash. Use your credit card.
Jack : Why? How I pay for it is no big deal.
Laura: Use your credit card.
Jack: Why? How I pay for it is no big deal.
Laura: It could be. What if something goes wrong with the stereo?
Jack: I'll return it for a refund.
Laura: But maybe the store won't give you a refund for some reason. Or maybe you'll only get part of your money back. If you charge it, you can dispute the charge with your credit card company. They may help you get your money back.
Jack: That's good thinking. Laura

Expressing Opinions

我有話要說How direct can you be? 美國人是否總是會直話直說? by Ruth Devlin

When Americans discuss ideas or express their opinions, they are often direct. They talk about good points and bad points. They disagree and may even argue about issues. These kinds of conversations contrast with discussions held in Chinese culture where mianzi (面子) is very important. Mianzi, or “face” in English, translates basically as respect or honor. In Chinese society, people can lose face, save face and give face. Losing face means bringing shame on oneself and others. This is done when a person shows anger or says negative things about others in public.

Why the difference? In general, Western cultures tend to be "individualistic" People place a lot of importance on public debate and freedom of expression. A personal sense of guilt guides one's behavior. When an adult makes a mistake his or her action involves only personal embarrassment.

There is no shame placed on one's family, company or country. Even though Westerners don't have conflict all the time, differences of opinion are accepted as a natural part of life.

Conversation A -Laura comes into the room

Hi, Laura, You look pretty upset. Yes, I just attended a very annoying meeting.

Why was it annoying? All we did was argue. No one agreed on anything.

Well, at least you know where everyone stands on the issues. That's true. But everyone has strong opinions, so we may never make a decision.

Who led the meeting? Jim, the guy who was supposed to lead it, didn't take charge.

So it was a disaster? Yes, I think I'll talk with him before the next meeting and encourage him to take control.

Good idea.

Conversation B-Jack hangs up the phone

Oh boy, I need to help the new guy in our office, Steve. Why?

Because he always says exactly what he thinks. What's wrong with that?

He's not sensitive. Being honest is good, but you have to be careful how you say things.

Yes, you do, or people won't have a very favorable opinion of you.

Steve needs to think before he speaks and consider the effect of his words.

Well, I hope you can help him understand the importance of tact. If you can't he's going to have a difficult time.

Grammar

Decorating for the Holidays

Holidays mean decorations for Americans 佳節應景裝飾
Americans enjoy making their homes look beautiful for holidays 對美國人來說,佳節意味著精心佈置應景裝飾的時候到了by Ruth Devlin

No matter what holiday it is, many Americans love to make their homes look festive. People put up decorations both indoors and out. Lawn displays are very popular at Christmas. And at Easter, people decorate trees in their yards with colored eggs.
Decorations can be simple or expensive. In these do-it-yourself days, many people enjoy making their own decorations, especially children. They make pictures and posters, knickknacks or window displays

Decorations are not strictly limited to single homes. Some neighborhoods work together to create a neighborhood effect. This is particularly popular at Christmastime. A street may call itself "Candy Cane Lane" for the Christmas holidays. Every house on the block will have candy canes along with other decorations in its yard.

Some communities even hold contests and give prizes for the best-decorated houses. In some areas, people buy tickets to tour decorated homes. The money from the ticket sales goes to a charity or another good cause.

Simple or extravagant, to many Americans, decorations make the holidays.

"We didn't hang that many!"
"OK, probably not. But we still have a lot. I'm glad these lights don't use much electricity or our bill would be sky-high this month!"

The American School Environment 美國校園走透透

What goes on in American classrooms? 美国教室里是什么模样?
by Ruth Devlin

September has arrived, and students are going back to school. What goes on in American classrooms? Well, they are often student-centered, and sometimes students even help make the class rules. Students don’t just sit and listen to lectures but are often involved in class discussions. These discussions help them discover facts and give their opinions.
The physical layouts of classrooms vary. Initially, student desks stand in rows. During the year, desks may be arranged in one big circle or put into small clusters. This allows students to work on projects in small groups.

Elementary school classrooms contain special learning areas. A corner may have a rug, soft chairs and many books where students can go to read. Or there may be a science corner for projects. Most American teachers have their own classrooms. In junior high and high school, the students change classrooms but the teachers stay put. This allows the teacher to decorate the classroom according to the subject being taught.

Fun in the Sun

樂在陽光下
For Americans, fun in the sun often means a suntan by Ruth Devlin
看看为什么美国人会这么喜欢把肌肤晒成古铜色

In the Western world, many believe a tan gives a person a healthy glow. Americans love the sun, and some spend hours outside getting a tan. Others spend money getting a tan inside at a tanning salon. Americans do this in spite of all the warnings about skin cancer. Eighty-one percent of teenagers know that sunburns increase the risk of developing skin cancer. But only 52 percent of teens are careful about protecting their skin.

Some people do take the risks seriously. However, they still want the tanned look without the resulting skin damage. They get their tans from a bottle of tanning lotion.

Not all Americans want tans, however. Some stay out of the sun. Or they wear hats and long-sleeved shirts and long pants when they go outside. But they do not carry umbrellas. In Asia, the same umbrella is used for protection from rain or sun. Americans use umbrellas only for rain.

Conversation
Come on, Laura, let's go, I can't wait to hit the beach!
Did you put on your sunscreen? No, I don't need sunscreen. I want to get tan.
But you don't want to get a sunburn, do you? Of course not. I don't want to look like a lobster!
Then use sunscreen. You can still get a tan, and you won't run the risk of domaging your skin.
Ok. I'll put some on when we get to the beach.
You need to apply it at least 30 minutes before you go out in the sun. Ok.

You could try one of these too. What is it? UV wrisband.
Then, put it on your wrist at the same time you apply sunscreen.
What does it do? expose the sun, and it turns purple. It turns brown when it's time to put on more sunscreen. And when the color turns to cream, it's time to get out of the sun.
That's certainly better than waiting until you're burned!
It is. But I'm still planning to stay in the shade at the beach.
Then I'll put the beach umbrella in the car!

Addition information:
Getting an artificial tan by using electric sun beds is big business. In North America alone the sun bed tanning business is bringing in well over &1 billion per year. But, are sun beds safe? Many medical experts believe they are not. Predictably, those in the sun bed business claim they are safe. So, before you make your decision, do somehomework-because the verdict is still out.

Eat, drink and even get married – all without leaving your car 在美国,无论是用餐,喝饮料, 甚至是结婚--全都不必走出车外,就能办到喔!

by Ruth Devlin

When you’re in a hurry, there’s nothing more convenient than a drive-through. Often written “drive-thru,” this convenience began due to America’s love affair with cars. Companies wanted to make it easier for people to do business without leaving their cars.

The first bank opened a drive-through in 1946. Fast-food restaurants followed in the late 1940s. Both fast-food restaurants and banks use microphones and speakers to communicate with customers. Fast-food customers give their orders from their car. Then they drive up next to a window in the building to receive their meals.

Banking customers receive their cash from an automatic drawer. Coffee huts and pharmacies have windows where drivers pull up to get coffee or medicine. Alan Hilozitz, a spokesperson for the Starbucks Coffee Company, told The New York Times newspaper, "Drive-throughs are a matter of customer want and customer need.

They serve a fast-paced world with people talking on cell phones and trying anything that will squeeze a little more into the day."
