Coffee Culture
你喜歡tall的咖啡嗎? -
Could you order coffee in English or would you become tongue-tied? If you would, you might need a lesson in coffee language.
Size
If you order a small, medium or large coffee, they'll know what you mean. But you'll be considered an amateur. Instead, ask for a "tall", "grande" or "venti."
Coffee names
Espresso: a strong coffee made by forcing hot water through ground coffee beans.
Espresso Creme: espresso served with an ounce of cream.
Shot: a measure of espresso. You can add an "extra shot" to any coffee drink.
Cappuccino: espresso made with foamy milk on top.
Cappuccino Mochaccino: cappuccino with chocolate.
Latte: espresso made with steamed milk.

Decaffeinated: no caffeine in your coffee.
Skinny: espresso made with skim milk and sugar-free syrup.
The next time you order coffee, use some of your newly acquired language. If you order a "grande decaffeinated cappuccino mochaccino," you're certain to sound impressive!
Grammar Gym:
"If you order a 'grande decaffeinated cappuccino mochaccino,' you're certain to sound impressive!"

The Turning Point
轉捩點Big or small, short or tall, we can all make a difference
小猪究竟能不能帮助农夫完成艰巨任务呢?Can the little pig help the farmer with a big task? by Hazel Johansen
Wow!” said Farmer Turner one evening as he walked through his garden. “Look at that turnip! Why, it’s the biggest one I’ve ever seen. I’ll take it home, and my wife can turn it into a wonderful stew.”
The farmer tried pulling the turnip out of the ground. But it was too big and wouldn’t come out. So he turned to his wife for help. Together the farmer and his wife pulled on the giant vegetable. But it remained in the ground. “Now what?” the farmer sighed. That night Farmer Turner couldn’t sleep. He tossed and turned all night thinking about the big turnip.
The next morning his wife had an idea. “Let’s ask one of the farm animals to help,” she said. “Surely together we can pull the turnip up.”
“Yes" said the farmer, turning the idea over in his mind. "But which animal?" just then Pinky the piglet turned up. "Wh-wh-what about me? he squealed. " I'll help." But the farmer turned him down. "You're too little," he laughed. " I'll ask the ox. He's big and strong." "But he's dangerous," warned his wife. "He may get upset and turn on us."
"Yes," said Farmer Turner, "But we need him. " So together the farmer, his wife and the ox pulled on the stubborn turnip. But it would not come out.
"We need more help," said the farmer. "H-h-how about me? Pinky cried. But the farmer paid no attention. "How about the horse?" he said instead. "She's had a hard day," said the farmer's wife. "She's tired."
"Yes, " said Farmer Turner, "but we need her." And so together the farmer, his wife the ox and the horse pulled. But they failed to get the turnip from the garden.
"Run and get the cow," cried the farmer. "But her milk's turned bad," said his wife. "And you said she's no longer useful."
"Yes," said Farmer Turner, "but we need her," So together the farmer, his wife, the ox, the horse and the cow struggled with the turnip. But it didn't go anywhere.
One by one the farmer called upon the other farm animals to help. The goat, the ram and even the rooster joined in. But it still would not come out. Everyone was disappointed. "M-m-my turn!" oinked Pinky.
"Don't turn me away. I r-r-really want to help," he cried.
But again the farmer turned up his nose at the piglet's offer. "You're just too little," he explained.
"Yes," said Pinky, " b-b-but you need me."
That turned the farmer's heart. So together the farmer, his wife, the ox, the horse, the cow, the goat, the ram, the rooster and the piglet tried one last time to pull the giant turnip out of the garden. And it turned out well. Together they did it! "Yahoo!" they all cheered. "The tiny piglet made the difference. He turned everything around." They all pushed and pulled the turnip to the farmhouse. The farmer's wife turned it into a delicious stew. Everyone pigged out! After that, they turned on some music and celebrated. Then happily, at the end of a long day, they all turned in.

A Bunny's Tale
兔寶寶的故事When you know you shouldn’t – don’t! 这支小兔子能不能度过难关呢?by Hazel Johansen
It was quite chilly as Bunny Longears skipped along the forest trail that led home. Suddenly he stopped. He thought he heard someone calling. He listened carefully. He looked around. He saw nothing. But as he started off, he again heard the faint cry.
“Please,” the voice called, “won’t you help me?”
“Oh, dear,” thought Bunny. “The forest is full of danger. I ought to go straight home, but this is such a strange thing. I’d better look into it.” So he turned back and headed toward the voice. He soon approached a deep pit. A cry came from the bottom of the damp hole.
“Please,” the voice called, “won’t you help me?”
“Who are you? What do you want?” asked the curious rabbit.
"See for yourself," invited the voice. "I have fallen into this cold, dark ditch. May I look to you for help?
"Well, I'll have to see about it. Come out where I can look you over." replied Bunny Longears. The creature moved into plain view.
"I'm just a little garden snake," he grinned slyly.
"I can see right through you," Bunny scolded. "You're no garden snake; you're a cold-blooded killer snake. You're nothing but trouble and everyone knows it. Look for help somewhere else." And he turned away.
"But wait1" the serpent urged.
"One as intelligent as yourself should see fit to help me."
"Intelligent?" smiled the rabbit.
"Most intelligent!" flattered the snake "Surely you know I mean no harm. I only ask a favor."
"What favor?" asked the bunny.
"A simple one," replied the crafty serpent." Just look through the grass and find a strong stick.
Then kindly lift me out of this miserable pit. Afterward, we can see one another off... as friends."
"I really shouldn't" said Bunny. "But maybe I'll look after you just this once." So he found a stick and lifted the ugly snake out of the pit and onto the grass nearby.
"My!" exclaimed the rabbit as he looked over the snake. "You look disgusting"
"Yes," grinned the snake, "And you look delicious!"

Dusty Earns His Keep
小狗灰灰找到人生的價值
Everyone has something special to share 灰灰有没有任何特殊才能可以和人分享呢?
by Hazel Johansen
Dusty the pup was keeping busy. “Splashing in the pond, chasing chickens, and digging in the garden sure make a farm dog tired!” he yelped. “Why, there’s so much to do, I can hardly keep up with it all. In fact,” he yawned, “I’m so tired. I’ll just find a shady spot where I can keep cool until my master comes home.” So he trotted to the pasture to rest under the oak tree where the dairy cows were lying. "And what are you doing here?" mooed Mrs. Milkmaker.
"Why," barked the puppy, "I'm lookin for a shady place to rest."
"Well, then, keep on looking." the cow continued. "We don't want you here with us. We give the farmer our finest milk," she mooed proudly.
"But what do you give? Can you give milk?"
"Well, I, uh..."
"Of course you can't!" bellowed the cow. "So keep moving ! You're not welcome here."
Dusty sadly went on his way. Noticing the barn door was open he went inside. " I'll nap in here," he thought. And he settled down in a stack of hay and closed his eyes.
"Baaa, baaa," said Sweaterby the lamb, interrupting the puppy's sleep. "Why, you're no good at all. You're baaad, baaad, baaad." The lamb kept it up. "Why does the farmer keep you around anyhow? We sheep give him our finest wool." he bragged. "But what do you give? Can you give wool?"
"Well, I, uh"
"Of course you can't! You're baaad, baaad, baaad!" Sweaterby the lamb kept at it until the puppy finally got up and went sadly out of the barn.
"Now where will I go? Dusty asked himself. And passing the hen house, he decided to duck inside.
"Oh, no! Not you again!" clucked Shelly the hen. "keep out! We're busy laying our eggs. And we can't keep on top of our work with you around!" she scolded. "Keep in mind that we chickens give the farmer our finest eggs. And what do you give? Can you give eggs? Dusty kept quiet. "Of course you can't! Now keep away from us!" the red hen warned.
Dusty could hardly keep back the tears. "All the other farm animals earn their keep." he thought, "Some give milk. Some give wool. Some give eggs. But I give nothing! What good am I?" he asked himself. "Maybe I should run away."
But just then, Dusty saw the farmer coming from the fields. Leaving his troubles behind he raced down the path to greet him. "Master! Master!" he barked wildly. His body wiggled, and his tail wagged. The farmer bent down and scooped the pup into his arms. Dusty licked the farmer's face excitedly.
"You always greet me with such happiness," the farmer smiled. "Now, keep this to yourself and don't tell the others." he said. "But of all the farm animals, you're the most special because you always give me so much joy!"
What do you give to others? If you're giving them happiness, then you're giving them the most special thing of all. So keep up the good work!

Bring your bucket. We’re going berry picking! 猜猜今年那支熊会赢得采莓果大赛的冠军

"Attention, all bears! Attention, all bears!" called the activity chairbear for the annual picnic. "The Bucket-of -Berries Contest is about to take place. Those taking part should go to the berry patch immediately. And don't forget to take along a bucket!"
Bears everywhere stopped what they were doing and rushed to the contest area. After all, the Bucket-of-Berries Contest was the most exciting event of the day.
"Now gather around," the chairbear began. "Let me take a moment to explain the rules. They're very simple. When I say "Go!" you may begin picking berries. Fill your buckets as quickly as you can. But take care! Don't spill any. Because as you know, the first bear to fill his bucket wins!
Now, is everybody ready? On your mark, get set, Go!"
" Wait for me!" cried Scout. "I'm coming too!"
"You?" laughed Old Grizzly. "Why, you're just a cub, Scout. you're much too small, and much too slow, to take us on!"
"I am smaller, And I am slower," agreed Scout. "But I'll take my chances. Besides, gathering berries is fun. If I do my best, it really doesn't matter if I win or lose."
"Good!" said Old Grizzly, "Because you're not going to win. I am!"
"You? " growled Brown Bear. "Don't take winning for granted. After all, I just might win instead!.

But a few defended Old Grizzly. Then suddenly, Old Grizzly gave Brown Bear a big shove. "There!" he said boldly. "Take that!"
"Ahhh!" Everyone held their breath. Brown Bear and Old Grizzly often argued, but never before had they actually fought.
Everyone was silent. Everyone wondered what would happen next. Just then....
"Hey, everybody, take a look!" cried Scout unexpectedly. "My bucket's full of berries!" Scout's announcement took everyone by surprise!
In fact, no one knew what to say or do.
Finally Old Grizzly began to smile. "My, my, Scout," he said, shaking his head from side to side. "It looks like you're the winner!" And he picked Scout up off the ground and gave him a great big bear hug.

Bring your bucket. We’re going berry picking! 猜猜今年那支熊会赢得采莓果大赛的冠军
by Hazel Johansen (7-13 &14-09)
"That's ridiculous!" Grizzly hollered. "Do you really think you can beat me? You're crazy!"
7-14-09
"crazy? I am not crazy!" screamed Brown bear.
"Now take it back!
" Never!" shouted Grizzly.
"Now, Now," interrupted the activity chairbear, trying to take control of the situation. But squabble. By this time, the other bears were taking sides. Most took up for Brown Bear.
"Congratulations!" he grinned.
Bears and people, take notice! Don't spend time arguing uselessly. Instead, take advantage of the time you have.
