America's national symbol draws crowds
美國白頭鷹 -
Did you know?
The bald eagle is one of America's largest birds of prey and has keen vision, spotting objects a mile away.
The birds mate for life and usually return to the same nest every year. Their nests, some of the world's largest, are often cone-shaped. In the spring, the female will lay one to three eggs. Then she and her male take turns warming the eggs and guarding the next.
It is believed that at one time there were half a million eagles in North America. By 1963, though, their numbers had dropped to 417 nesting pairs in the lower 48 states. There were many causes, but the major reason was the use of the pesticide DDT. In 1972 the U.S. forbade the pesticide, and bald eagles now number around 9,800 nesting pairs.
While bald eagles are no longer endangered, there are still laws that provide protection for them. People everywhere hope this proud bird will fly free in the skies for many years to come.

Future of Tigers
This amazing animal could disappear from the wild in our lifetime.老虎的未来。这种令人惊奇的动物有可能在我们有生之年就从野外消失踪影。
One hundred years ago, over 100,000 tigers wandered the earth, but today there are less than 4,000 in the wild. Even more alarming is the fact that unless immediate answers are found, the tiger could become extinct within a decade.
Tiger basics
Traditionally tigers have been admired for their strength, size, beauty and bold colors. Tigers may look alike, but no two tigers have the same pattern of stripes. They are the largest of the big cats, with bodies as long as two meters and one-meter-long tails.
Tigers are powerful, muscular - weighing up to 363 kilograms - and incredibly fast. They can run at speeds up to 56 kilometers per hour. This speed and strength gives them an advantage over their prey, allowing them to kill much larger animals for food. Tigers have excellent eyesight and hunt in the dark. They hunt alone and travel over a wide area in search of food. Yet in spite of these qualities, nothing has been able to prevent the rapid decline of this beautiful beast.
The threats
In the 20th century alone, three subspecies became extinct: the Bali tiger, the Caspian tiger and the Javan tiger. From the 1930s through the 1980s, one of these subspecies of tigers disappeared nearly every 20 years. Up until the 1930s, tiger hunting was the greatest menace, but since then, loss of habitat has become a major threat. In the past, tigers roamed from Siberia to Bali and from Turkey to the Russian and Chinese coastlines. Today only about seven percent of their original habitat remains, resulting in fewer tigers in the wild.
As more forests are converted into zones for agricultural or building sites, the tigers' hunting and mating grounds are increasingly lost. The clearing and selling of timber is another factor that is leading to disappearing territory for the tigers.
However, loss of habitat is only one of the reasons why these big cats are endangered. Poachers hunt and kill the animals for various body parts that are sold and used in traditional Asian medicines. Tigers are also widely hunted for their fur. Agencies around the world are searching for ways to save this magnificent animal, but will the solutions come in time?
How can we make a difference?
How can we help governments and agencies like the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) who are working hard to save the tigers?
* Encourage friends and family members to never use anything made from illegal tiger parts. Spread the word that governments have found and approved other sources of traditional medicine made without tiger parts.
* Contact officials and ask for stricter laws against poachers and private owners.
* Pledge to buy wood and paper products made only from legally cleared forests. Look for products that carry the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) label, guaranteeing that the item comes from legal sources.
* Take a tiger vacation. Traveling to tiger reserves in India and elsewhere helps provide desperately needed income and builds support for tiger protection.
WWF hopes to help double the number of tigers in the wild by 2022, the next Year of the Tiger. Let's do our part before it's too late to save these amazing animals.

The Elephants of Thailand
泰國養象記Own an elephant for a day at this unique farm 在獨一無二的牧場裡,當一天的大象飼主by Yvette Cardozo
Kwan squeaked at me. She flapped her ears. She looked me in the eye, and most important, she wanted that banana in my hand.
I was supposed to put the banana on her tongue. But Kwan deftly snatched it from my hand. Elephants eat 10 percent of their body weight a day. That's easily 300 kilograms of leaves, fruit or whatever.
At Patara Elephant Farm in Chiang Mai, Thailand, you become an "elephant owner for a day." You inspect your elephant, feed it, brush it, wash it and then ride it to a waterfall. There is a serious side to this. Forty years ago, there were 6,000 domestic and 10,000 wild elephants in Thailand. Today, it's down to 3,200 domestic and only 1,600 wild.
"If we let it go on," said Theerapat Trungprakan (Pat to us), "in another generation there would be no elephants left. " This in a country with 30 words for elephant. And so, I met Kwan. I learned to check her skin for streaks of dirt - a sign she is sleeping lying down as a healthy elephant should. I fed her a basket of fruit and sugar cane (甘蔗).
"Bon, bon."
A signal for Kwan to open her mouth, then, "Dee, dee. Dee, dee." Good girl.
After lunch (hers, not mine), I brushed the dirt off her back with a bundle of leaves so I wouldn't be scraped raw while riding.
The elephants spray themselves with dirt to keep bugs off, but sitting on all that dried dirt is like sitting on sandpaper.
And then we went to the river. I scrubbed with a brush. She sprayed water from her trunk. I hugged. She squeaked. We played.
Getting up on her, though, was another matter. The more limber fold stepped on their elephants' knees and were raised, like an elevator, to chest height, where they scrambled aboard. I took the easy way out. Kwan kneeled and two mahouts grabbed my arms and dragged me aboard. You sit right behind the head. Yeah, you're way up there. But it's far more stable than sitting in one of those giant wooden seats you usually find at elephant rides.
To go, it's "pai." Stop is "how." I said "how" a lot.
Pat started his elephant farm as a rescue program 10 years ago. Kwan, for instance, had been begging for food on the streets of Bangkok. Of the 22 elephant farms in Chiang Mai, this is the only breeding farm. When we visited, six of his 18 females were pregnant. Pat made a point of telling us that his elephants are not trained and that the babies are not separated from their mothers. In some places training can be brutal, involving separating babies from their mothers, imprisoning them in cages and jabbing them with sharp sticks until their wills are broken.
"We specialize in care and breeding," Pat said proudly. "Our elephants are special." We went to a waterfall where the elephants drank, stole more bananas and played. They squirted each other, swam and ducked under water. One fellow turned like a top, throwing his head back and slapping the water with his trunk. I thought about my previous visit to Thailand 12 years ago when I had fed one of those begging Bangkok elephants. Who knows! Maybe it was Kwan.
More Information:
Chiang Mai is in northern Thailand, about an hour's flight from Bangkok.
The coolest and driest time of the year for Chiang Mai is November through February. April is the hottest, with temperatures that easily top 37 degrees Celsius.
When the temperatures drop in the evening, the Chiang Mai night bazaar, or night market, comes to life. Tourists sample Thai cuisine and shop for Chiang Mai's renowned handicrafts.

When the temperatures drop in the evening, the Chiang Mai night bazaar, or night market, comes to life. Tourists sample Thai cuisine and shop for Chiang Mai's renowned handicrafts.

Sniffing Out Peanuts
能嗅出花生粉塵的狗狗Dogs help people with severe food allergies live better lives by Lisa Holl Chang
Riley Mers has a deadly allergy to peanuts. Touching a peanut can cause severe hives. Breathing in peanut dust can cause Riley’s throat to close up, resulting in breathing difficulties. Fear of such allergic reactions made Riley avoid school, friends’ homes and church. But that changed when Riley, now 9, met Rock’O – a dog trained to sniff out peanuts.
Dogs can be trained to detect drugs, bombs and many otherthings. That gave Riley's mom an idea: Why not train a dog to detect peanuts? It turns out that some dog trainers were doing just that. One of them is Sharon perry in Texas. She trains dogs to sniff out peanuts- even peanut oil and dust- in six months.
The cost of a trained "peanut dog" can be over US $10,000. To assist families, the Mers together with two dog trainers started Angel Service Dogs. The organization raises money for families who need a trained dog. So far, seven dogs have been placed. Riley now attends school with Rock'O. With his nose for peanuts, Rock'O helps Riley live a freer life.
