History and influences
many believe that explorer John Cabot landed on the island in 1497 and claimed it for England. Sometime later, people from Ireland, France and a few from Scotland arrived and made their homes there. During a time of turmoil in Scotland in the 1800s, many more Scots moved to Cape Breton. Their influence can still be seen today, especially in Cape Breton's culture and music.

The music began in Scotland but now belongs to Cape Breton. It is the traditional music that was played when 18th and 19th century Scottish settlers first arrived.
